Thanks for the responses. Normally I would just open em up but definitely see some coins going for a premium that are in the mints box, guess people like the buried treasure aspect of it:) Well Guess I'll go ahead and crack one open, thanks!

I received mine. Opened the box and well, lets say that the coins are nice and the packaging is nice. I already have the coins, don't collect packaging so off to the bay this one goes. Don't know why I bothered to even sign up for the dang things. Habit I guess.

 What if the Mint messed up your order and sent you the wrong or seriously damaged product(s)! Then months or years later you sold the set 'unopened' or some beneficiary of your collection down the road opens it up and discovers something amiss? I say open them up and inspect the contents, store them in archival zipper type bags with silica properly. Cardboard boxes are full of acid that leaches out, attract moisture and can even invite insects that like to nest or eat the paper. :)

Mine is going through Indy as well. I have noticed on ebay the sets are selling around $130, give or take. Do you people think this value will continue to go up from this level or is this just an all hyped up thing at this point?

My other question is how often does uncle sam mint these kind of sets. Should I watch the mint site more often for these special?

The Mint's fulfillment facility is located in Plainfield, Indiana outside Indianapolis. Everyone's orders are going through here.

You should put yourself on the Mint's product updates list. They have snail mail catalogs and postcards that come out infrequently to announce upcoming products also, but these day's you are likely to hear about new products being released from online sources, word of mouth: blogs, forums, etc. Just have to be tuned it all the time and ready for the next release.

There's been a lot of nightmare stories of stuff coming from the mint damaged or with spots. It's essentially taking a gamble getting anything from the mint. Anybody who would want to take the gamble buying an unopened box off ebay when there are opened sets availabe with sellers saying they're perfect with no spots is........ a moron. Especially when all you're hoping for is a perfect set anyway and you're paying a 3x premium!

Krispy, I got a box for all the mailers I get from the Mint. I figure they might be worth something someday (100 years from now). Can you imagine if you had a mailer begging you to order the Jackie Robinson $5 gold coin for $150...or something like that? ...you never know.

I agree! I have kept some of the Mint's direct mail pieces as well, usually for the coins I have liked or ended up buying. I figured it might also have some added value to the overall picture of how a new coin, commem or series was conceived, marketed and produced if you keep the corresponding card with the coin(s) they advertised.

You make a valid point Chris, still, there are times that I like to leave things un-opened.

Why? Would he be any more of a moron than a person buying an unopened box from the mint?

Because if he buys an unpened box from the Mint he can then open it and if there is a problem you can send it back. If you are buying an unopened box from a seller a year or so later you open it and there is a problem you're stuck with it. Can't return it because you were sold an unopened box and you no longer have that to send back..

I'd venture to say that the guy buying the unopened box on e-bay is going to open it once he gets it.....

Right, and once he does he's stuck with it. At least getting an unopened box from the Mint you can return it if you're not happy. So the ebay buyer is the bigger moron as per the original question.

Not necessarily....doesn't e-bay have a return policy in regard to "item sent not as described"? I know pay-pal does and if that were the case I'd file a complaint with them. I've done it and won.....:smile

I would have to disagree with that. What is the buyer missed the chance to order it directly from the mint, and in doing so had to turn to the secondary market to obtain it. If this were the case, doesn’t it make the sense that the buyer might want to obtain a set that was not cherry picked? Sure, there is a chance that the set might be toned or otherwise flawed, but that’s the risk you take when you’re on a treasure hunt. :smile

And if I was the seller I would be happy to give you your refund, as long as you return what I sold you, an unopened box. If you want to return an opened one then you are not returning what I sent you. If you file a Not as described complaint my answer to the complaint is that I sold an UNOPENED package from the Mint. If you received an UNOPENED package from the Mint then you got exactly what I offered. If you claim it arrived open, did you file a claim or notice with the post office?

Returning an opened unopened package for not as described is like returning a vase you dropped and broke because it was not described as being broken. I shouldn't be held responsible for damage you did (opening the box, breaking the vase) after the package arrived.

Okay, Ok Conder. You make a valid point. My feeling in regard to all of this was that if an unopened box from the mint was bought on e-bay and it arrived containing (say) a mint set instead of a Coin and Chronicles I'd be mighty ticked. Guess I'd have a heck of a time trying to explain to you something of this nature. Indeed you would be suspicious and rightly so. But I'd still file a report with pay-pal......:smile
