Sorry took me a minute. Yes I looked at your set. Very nice I must say and something to cherish that's for sure. Looks like you've knocked a huge dent in the set and also some very nice coins. Dusty
Very nice! Thanks for sharing. In a local auction recently I watched a nearly complete Vol. 1 (only missing 09sVDB) get bid up to $401. The 14D had a 0oclock gouge on the obv. and the 22, 24D were in g4 at best. The 31s was a strong vf. The album didn't sell, as there was a $460 reserve. (I spoke with the auctioneer and inspected it personally when picking up my other purchases and he told me as much.) I pointed out the gouge in the 14d which had gone unnoticed by him, and opined that it was only due to the blurry photos that the set made in to $400. I told him that if I were selling it, I'd have taken the $400 and bought a problem free 14d. The same album is on the block again as I type this, with much better photos. These show the gouge and condition of all the keys and semi-keys. I'm betting it will not achieve $400 again. Just trying to give you an idea on the Vol. 1. Anyway, the set I refer to in no way can compare to yours!!! If I were looking to sell a collection like yours, I'd sell Volume 1 (1909-1940) as one item, and the rest of them all as another, separate item. This is only if you choose to sell it all raw! If sending some out to TPG, sell those individually. See, your pieces are exceptional, and I don't know what you paid for each component, but you do. Ask yourself this (especially if you paid retail for them as opposed to an inheritance or cherrypicks of epic proportions): Will sending it off to a TPG constrict the possible hammer price? This will depend (I believe) on how you are going to sell. I see others think you are selling to a dealer. I personally think you are going to consign it to a local auctioneer. (Clarify, please?) If going the auction route, I'd try it all raw first, with a hefty reserve. Then the issue of grade is more subjective, whereas if slabbed, and especially with higher grade keys involved, buyers may simply stick to or below book value. (Buying the slab instead of the coin.) I believe that attempting to sell them raw may bring out higher bids, since there will not be a glaring grade stated on it people are left to their own judgement. Make sure you have a reserve!!! If no sale is made due to reserve not met, then I'd submit to TPG and do the keys individually. My one question is this: Why sell locally, when naturally the more exposure in a more publicized venue would attract more, (theoretically) higher bids? Do you know the buyer or auctioneer personally and are throwing them a bone while trying to make sure you don't bury yourself? Sorry so quizzical! Just trying to help!
Hey thanks for the input. As to selling not for real sure. As done stated I have a lot of time in this set and would love to sell it to someone who would appreciate it. There are several auction houses around here that have said they would photo it and get the photos out so others could see it. I have it posted on Craigslist as we speak. As far as to what I have in it goodness I really don't know. I have chased these cents around everywhere. I guess I was just trying to get a general idea on to what would be a fair offer. I have looked at tons of sets on eBay and well some of them are a lot nicer grades than mine and vise versus to. I have no claim as to having the nicest set there is because I know many collectors that have far better. In the same sense though as done stated it is a set that I have enjoyed and still do enjoy. We have outgrown our current house though and was just contemplating the thought of letting this collection go and use that money for some of the resources. I have about wiped out all the local shops around here of Lincoln Cents lol. Anyways thanks again and yes sure any questions just ask away. Dusty
I could see the entire set bringing $3000-$4000, with the 09sVDB being $900-$1200 or so, 14D bringing $500-$700, 31s somewhere around $200-$400, and consideration given to the quality of your other early ones. These are only my opinions, and I know firsthand how much of a roller coaster those more localized auctions can be. Good luck! :thumb: You will keep us in the loop regarding your decision to sell or not to sell, and the results of the possible sale, won't you?
Yes I will keep you all posted and I am still adding to the collection. I was offered $3000 for it at one the local flea markets several weeks ago. I will say this right now not needing to sale or wanting to for that matter hahah just trying to get a feel as to what I should expect. Dusty
Took set to flea market today and got a fair offer didn't take it through. Think I might hold onto it unless a offer comes along that I can't refuse. Still would like input on value though. Dusty
If you are really asking then I will really answer. The answer is yes you should take it if you are happy with the offer. I basically have the same collection except it is missing the 09S but has the 14D and 22ND, 55/55, 72/72. All those key dates are slabbed which leaves some holes in the album.
I do feel like its a fair offer. I feel like I've enjoyed greatly putting it together. Also would be making a little profit off of it. Dusty
$4000 is definitely a decent offer, but never take the first offer! Time to negotiate! It would seem that you have a serious potential buyer, so work it! Have fun though. You seem to be happy with this offer, but you should consider any time and effort, rent for SDB or price of safe (storage costs), when doing the numbers. If you hadn't considered that before, do it now and ask yourself if you still are making money. If you are truly happy with that offer, and willing to let it go, I say still try to haggle. It's a skill that needs honing. Just don't counter so high as to scare it away. Tell him you want $5000, meet in the middle at $4500, and remember me when you have $500 extra! :thumb: Don't forget to keep us updated! It is appreciated! I'm really interested in the outcome. Good luck to you!
I'd sell it for $4,000.... You might make more money if you sold them one by one but as a bulk, that's a great price.
Yes, but individual coin sale SHOULD be done with tpg'd coins IMO. That would require further investment, and (at least for me, when I sent coins off before) anxiety and stress over shipping. A lot of the folks here probably may scoff at my distrust of couriers, but that's the way I feel about it FWIW. I started another sentence here but my 3 year old started squawking and it derailed my train of thought.
I don't agree with this. If he has a ebay account with high feedback and a system to sell them there he might do well. But you can't know that or what the dealers in his area are like. There are many good dealers out there and many bad ebay sales. It's all about time and money. They more time he takes to sell the more money he should get for them and that is a choice he will need to make.
I do have a very good feedback with eBay when it comes to selling. I feel like the set could maybe go for $4000 on eBay. Then though you have all the fees with that. Money in pocket I think selling it straight out would be better. The person wanting it is a collector himself and is kind of star struck when it comes to this set. I feel like that with any collection it can be added to and will only increase in value. As done said though the fun of searching these coins out has been real fun and I still have other sets that will probably be selling also. I have always loved the Lincoln Cent and will continue to do so but the amount of time that I've put into it in the past well just don't have a lot of time anymore. We have 2 kids a 10 year old and a 8 month old. Plus about 5 years ago God called us to preach. With these things we feel like that the amount of time spent "coining" could be spent doing other things. Of course you know how it is I am the type of person that goes wide open with everything and this set has been one of those. I can walk away with the offer and be happy and sad to see it go. In the same sense though I feel like it is a chapter in my life that is done with. Also looking forward to starting a new chapter. Dusty
Good for you! So what will you do? Sell for $4000 and be happy you found it a good home, or haggle a little just for fun but not really expect for more? (Pleasant surprise if you do ). Or will you not be able to part with it after all at zero hour? It's been fun sharing in your experience, thanks for that.
Well I didn't sale it. Long story guy really didn't understand that when I said 4 for it that I meant 4 grand he brought 400 Dusty
