Lincoln Chronicles Set, thoughts?

You know, the William Henry Harrison Mint Rolls are still commanding a fortune. What's so different about these than the ones you could buy at the bank? NOTHING! What are people paying for? PACKAGING!

There is no difference in the Silver Commemorative Lincoln dollar in the Chronicle set than the ones you could buy individually. Also, there is no difference in the Lincoln cents you could obtain in the proof set. So, obviously people are buying this set for the packaging although I'm sure some people bought it in order to get the Commemorative Dollar which they may have missed when it first came out.

That being said, there will still only be 50,000 of these sets available. There won't be any more packaging available for someone to "create" one of these sets. Just like there won't be any more William Henry Harrison Mint Roll wrappers available to create "mint rolls".

Think about it... I could say to my friend:

"Hey, I've got a bank-wrapped roll of William Henry Harrison dollars".

    To which he would reply:

"Yes you inferior being, but I have a mint-wrapped (even though they're not REALLY mint-wrapped) roll of William Henry Harrison dollars".

To which I would reply (as I'm twirling my finger in a circular motion about a half-inch from my temple in that "crazy" gesture):

"Yes, but in my book, that and $3.49 will get you a hot cup of Starbucks Latte".

HOWEVER, many people will look at the same scenario and say, "Oh Jeeeeez, I've just GOT to get a mint-wrapped roll of those" and they would be willing to pay the price!! And the story is the same for the Lincoln Chronicle Set. But, the Chronicle set sure has some pretty packaging if I say so myself.... :)

IMHO , I don't think this is the "Flavor of the month" type coin set at all.
This is "The Essential" Lincoln collector set. There are more Lincoln Cent collectors than all other collectors combined. (That's what I read anyway..)

Those that collect Lincoln's (and I do, hehe) HAVE GOT TO have this Set if they are to complete their collection. This goes for the ones who started with 1909 - present and the memorial collectors..!!

Can you imagine a set like this in 1909? 1959? ...

Think of this, ..The Lincoln LP1's are still going for $90 a box on Ebay to this day..!! and they will KEEP bringing that price for a very long time...and it had a 100,000 mintage if i remember correctly?.and you can get those coins all day long for $1 a roll now, but its the us mint PACKAGING that counts.!

Now, I think this SET will be JUMPING WAY up after the flippers go by the way-side. I am confident it will settle around $185.00+ or so. This SET has "stunning " packaging appeal, it also contains a limited Lincoln "Silver" dollar to boot..!! There are just WAY TO MANY Lincoln collectors that HAVE got to have this set to COMPLETE their collections...

...Once you see this set you realize you must have it (if you collect lincolns that is, and even if you don't, you still think its attractive enough to collect, it's just at what price).

I recommend buying one (or 2) and hanging onto it...

Well, that is my opinion, and I won't be selling mine..!! Thanks...

Not sure where the price will end up after the flippers have made their money, but I'm pretty confident they will never be regularly available for less than the Mint issue price of $55.

I'm pretty happy with the set I have and I'm keeping it :)

I just did a search for these on ebay......wow.....the Buy it Now listings are making a killing compared to the auctions. Auctions are $124 to $150, but most in the $130s. A buy it now sold today for $172. So if you have an extra one, just throw out a BIN crazy price for 24 hours and see what happens.....then thank me later.

The quality varies. Mine is great. My brothers, not so much.

There are over 300 sets on eBay right now for sale.
Christmas is around the corner, but I'll guess they will be around $100 after that.

I don't know about that, these coins are produced in high numbers and are easy to come by. I feel that my Lincoln set is complete with the lose coins...for a whole lot less money. I don't see the value in the packaging and in a year or so I expect more people to feel the same way. I think it's a very nice looking set but certainly not worth the price.

I like the set very much. The presentation of the set I think is very attractive. I'm not sure whether the price will rise or fall, but I haven't tried to sell and don't have plans to do so. But, I think anyone that bought one from the mint will always be able to at the very least to break even to include the mint's S/H fees.

The silver abe is just going to go up and the four cents dont know. But the packaging is the key. There are only 50,000 and a lot more cent collectors not to mention commemorative collectors than there are of these sets. The value should go up 200.00 plus a set by 2011. I think the Abe Comm will do just as the indian head comm did.

My set is not for sale.
The 4 pennys in my set are flawless. Alot better then the pennys in the earlier proof sets.
I'm very happy with this set. It's gonna stay in my collection for a long time.

Same for me Slick. You know there is a contradiction goig on in this very interesting thread. Lots of members state they love the set and the low mintage makes them feel good about being able to aquire one or two sets.
But then they turn around and say the demand will drop so they better sell now and make the bucks.
I don't disagree with either side but isn't it interesting that there is a fine line between collecting and keeping coins for personal pleasure and collecting coins to resell at a profit. I think this hooby is great and respect all views. Am in awe at the wisdom and knowlege and opinions expressed here. Glad I'm part of it. zeke
PS. Duh, maybe ' contradiction' wasn't the correct word to use, maybe.

My local coin store was not very positive on the sets. I wonder if that's because they can't sell them and make any money. I wonder if that's why they are biased in a negative way. I saw they had some raw coins in a box, but of course not the sets.

There are only 50,000 of the packaging. Not the silver dollar. They made 500,000 silver dollars. That's the figure for MS and PFs combined. Granted, the Indian head comm had 500,000 also and it's still way up there.

Many people will buy the loose or slabbed coins without the set and feel satisfied. I have a PF70 silver dollar and the one in my set. And I know one other person that has one that won't be getting rid of it. That leaves 499,997 still available out there. Even if 250,000 of them are saved, never to hit the market for 50 years, there's still 250,000 of them that will be constantly circulating, being bought and sold.

Maybe it could become as popular as the buffalo. I hope it does. I'm very happy with them. If all the flippers would get done, we might be able to get a clearer picture of the value of it.

The number is down to 499,993. I have a single Lincoln dollar PF69, and 3 Chronicles, one for me and two for Christmas gifts to my kids. Big impact huh?

Yeah. I guess the point is, even if everybody on this forum was keeping 3 or 4 in their family, it takes a lot of people to hang on to a lot of them before they become scarce on the market. If coin collecting as a hobby continues to grow, 500,000 is a very small number. But that's a big 'if'.

That's true. I collect to collect, not to invest. Big difference there. Yea I've sold a lot of coins for more than I paid for them, which I view as a good thing. :smile But I don't buy or collect for profit. It will be interesting to watch, I'll bet that there will always be a for sale supply for the Lincoln dollar proof, but like you say, it will depend on growth in the hobby.
