Your set is progressing nicely. Charmy @ http://www.thepennylady.com/ can help a lot with the 1909-1940 pieces. She has both graded and raw coins to choose from. Very fair on grading and price. Keep us posted.
Picked up a 1909S today for $75 and a few more coins. Got the whole lot for $100. I think I might of over payed on the 1909S but wanted to start getting some key coins. I paid $8 for the 1931D, it’s getting set free.
I just finished the second Whitman cent book (1941-1974), still working on Book 1. A few cents are going to be painful to buy, the 1909-S obviously and a few other early S coins. I find collecting via the Whitman book is a different kind of excitement over buying my usual loves (mostly 19th century coins).
I always preferred slabbed coins but after completing a Dansco Franklin Half book in BU/AU and how nice it turned out I decided to try another book. I thought it would be a cheap task, lol wrong! I changed my thoughts on the key coins, I’m getting what I can afford now as I’m finding out the keys come at a premium. Fill the holes and upgrade later if needed and cost allows. Early S Mint stuff comes with a good premium. I will draw the line on condition though. Good luck with your 1st series book!
Your local coin shop must love you not to mention all the eBay vendors out there. Not to hard to complete an album when you you spend the money. I fill grade sets by CRH try that then you’ll have something. Only thing is it takes YEARS to do it that way. So keep on buying and you’ll have some nice coins and an album that reflects the money spent. That said I do think that when your done you’ll have something very nice and just because I don’t collect that way doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. It’s your hobby collect how and what YOU like! Reed
Thanks for the info! How might you suggest I fill my book without buying the coins? I have no idea what grade sets by CRH means, I’m a relatively new collector By the way my LCS dealer is a older miserable man, I don’t think he likes anyone.
You can’t fill the album your working on with out buying it’s impossible. What I mean buy grade sets is matching all the coins in one grade like all coins in EF condition or AU50. I build sets from CRH in VF and EF condition and use inexpensive folders to store them in. Generally now I just do sets in the 1930 to 1958 year range because there still do-able out of the wild. I kinda cheated last time I bought a bunch of Lincoln cents for the albums and bought a 40lb. bag from my LCS. The owner bought it from a collector that sold it to him and hadn’t searched the entire bag. It was all copper mostly LMC coins but it yielded a ton of wheat cents and was a great supply of coins for a bunch of holes in my album. That’s just how I do it. Just enjoy what you do I know I do. Reed
Good Luck! Most people don't realize how long and difficult task this really is. Make sure you keep your folder/album in a ziplock bag. Also recommend a desiccant pack and a red, sacrificial cent and even a silver coin in the bag.
I do keep it in a ziplock bag but never thought about the desiccant pack or sacrificial cent. Sacrifice begins, lol
I had a complete set of Lincoln cents a few years ago before I sold everything. My 1909 S VDB was a PCGS AU53. The only advice I can give you is when you get to the very expensive coins like this or the 1914D make sure you buy them graded and certified by a reliable company like PCGS or NGC I got burned once by buying a raw 1914 D Lincoln and I lost a few hundred dollars on the deal. Like the others said...take your time and do your research
Yes, I did some research and found out the 1914D has counterfeit copies. I recently won a NGC graded VG8 1914D. I hope to upgrade down the road. I’ve been known to do things backwards sometimes. Lol AU53 1909 S VDB must of been pretty nice!
