I picked up this Licinius from an auction last month and finally making my way to its attribute. The sellers had it as RIC IV Antioch 133b. So far everywhere I attempt to reference it I come up empty handed. So I'm reaching out to you of way more experience than I. I need a schooling and I know you all are some good educators. Licinius I, RI Ae Follis, 23mm, 6.6g, Antioch 310 AD IMP C LIC LICINNVS PF AVG laureate bust right GENIO IMPERATORIS Genius standing left, holding patera and cornucopia, altar * in left field E in right ANT in exergue RIC VI Antioch 133b, R2 also, not sure if that was BD or not. Likely was but itcame right off. Treating it just incase.
Yes, it is RIC VI Antioch 133b Dane has the RIC numbers for the GENIO coins here- http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm
Thanks I forgot all about catbikes. I've been on wildwinds, vcoins, sng, forum & a couple of others. I don't have but a small hand full of late Romans. The condition & the price (minus the bd) drew my intrest.
This came right off. Soaked it in distilled water, let it dry then put verdicare letting it set. Will take better pics in a few days. Won't put it with collection for about a year provided it doesn't show any new BD. So far I've come across 4 coins I've picked up that had small amounts had good luck with 3 of them. Seems to me a small amount is easy enough to "cure" just have to keep them seperate from collection.
Smojo => congrats on scoring that sweet Licinius-I (I hope you cured the potential BD) Ummm, I have a sorta similar example as well (wanna see it?) ...
I have a couple of similar examples from London mint LICINIUS I AE2 Follis OBVERSE: IMP LICINIVS P F AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right REVERSE: GENIO POP ROM S-F, Genius standing left, modius on head, loins draped, holding patera & cornucopia, PLN in ex. Struck at London 313-4 AD 3.2g, 22mm RIC VII 3 LICINIUS I AE2 Follis OBVERSE: IMP LICINIVS P F AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right REVERSE: GENIO POP ROM S-F, Genius standing left, modius on head, loins draped, holding patera & cornucopia, PLN in ex. Struck at London 313-4 AD 3.1g, 21mm RIC VII 3
The OP pic showed a little BD. I thought I'd post follow up pics. I've soaked it in distilled water & used verdicare. Still a little wet from the verdicare. I will let it set on a towel a few days to let it dry. Whats left is hard deposits but no more BD that I can see.
