Letters go under the rim.. What kind of error?

    Are these recognized as collectible errors or just machine damaged coins?

    It is classified as a "die error". The error.ref article said these were only on a couple of dies in 1982, and 1983 so I'm assuming that would make them rare.

    It's an unusual form of die deterioration. I'm not aware of any from 1983. They don't appear to have much value. Then again, I've never seen one sold in a public venue that was accurately and fully described.
