    Thanks to everybody that worked so hard on trying to come up with the right answer.

    The commemorative Lafayette silver dollar of 1900 was issued in conjunction with the erection of an equestrian statue of Lafayette in Paris during the Exposition of 1900.
    Both the statue and the enabling coin were an expression of gratitude for Lafayette"s contribution to the rebel cause during the American War for Independance.
    It is numismatically significant in being the first U.S. commemoritive coin of one dollar denomination, and the first authorized U.S. coin to bear the poitrait of one of our presidents (Washington).
    The coin was sold by the Lafayette Memorial Commission for $2.00 each and the profits, augmented by contributions ($50,000) of American school children, paid for the erection of the statue.
