1840-D quarter eagle! I obtained a pretty nice example of a coin that was the last gold coin missing in my 1840 mint set. All that's left now are a few dimes and half dimes. Maybe just a total of three. This piece, one of the rarest, if not the rarest in the entire Liberty quarter eagle series has maybe 100 survivors - I "won" the bidding for it in the Heritage Auction yesterday - XF45 Details (damage) but even with the damage it's pretty nice - everything is there. And since a lot of the surviving coins are very low grades this one is for me a reasonable example. A full grade XF45 might run 5 figures. I knew my only realistic hope (besides winning the mega lottery) was to get a decent details coin. Me, I like this one! I suspect it's an early die state because the typical die cracks are minimal - on what I assume are later die states the die cracks are quite prominent. It's in an ANACS holder. I will probably send it to NGC at some point so I can put it in my registry set! Fiddlehead in the NGC registry - 1840 mint set. Here's most of them.

FWIW, the 1840 half dollar in my set is actually the 1840 (O). An interesting coin as it has an 1839 reverse - nd in 1839 the mint mark was on the obverse - so it has no mint mark but was definitely minted in New Orleans. There is substantial research into the tracking of the dies that made that coin. You can see the differences between the reverses of the half dollars below - as later in the year they stared using the 1840 reverse in New Orleans. Pretty cool.
