The die is set aside for emergency use.&nbsp; </p><p><br /></p><p>The once-fresh 1827 die eventually fails, and no new 1827-dated die is ready to use. </p><p><br /></p><p>The Mint must continue production, so the well-worn obverse die #1 is pulled from storage and paired with a new reverse die.
