I see what you are saying...we will have to wait to see what a TPG says when I do my annual bulk submission request. Here's a closeup of the steps... To me, there is a mush right under column #3 that would keep it from FS. But, I could see how, on a "lucky me" day...it could pass for 5FS over at PCGS. In any case, it is probably as close to a 53D FS as I'll get...especially for a couple dollars.
Here are two recent pickups - I'm much more confident they would classify as solid Full Steps. This 1940 D, though, might not make it past AT... See that line on Tom's upper head on the obverse of this 1946 D? That's not a gouge...that's a die crack. Pretty cool, huh?
It is a very nice O-122. There is a dot to the right of the 6 in the date, but it is not the 1336/1836 overdate. Lance...AU-58 or MS-62?
Yes, O.122, the bar dot variety. okbustchaser...right again, of course. NGC MS61...probably an AU58 cross but I like the old fattie holder and will keep it. Here's the 1836/1336 in AU58. O.108a. One oddity to the O.108 die marriage is a doubling of the clasp. It is not known if this was done to test metal flow. The clasp is often weak, being directly opposite eagle's head. Or perhaps it was just fanciful design by the engraver. Interestingly this doubling appears on two different obverse dies. But the O.108 is known for a more obvious error: a 3 was mistakenly punched in the date instead of an 8. As luck would have it, the 8 overlaid the 3 almost perfectly. Only the ball from the underlying 3 shows in the 8's lower loop. Strictly speaking this isn't an overdate. No early die from another year was used. But the same could be said about many CBH's that are accepted as overdates. The "a" die state is attributed by the die crack at the base of the date, and another joining the right side stars (very subtle here). Lance.
Nickles is not my specialty, but I would call that 4 steps. But I suspect there may be years with no full steps available. Nickle is such a hard metal. I'm amazed that they've come so far and can get so much better detail these days.
I picked up this partial Littleton collection so guess I'll start collecting Kennedy's. A lot of empty holes to fill.......
