I really only wanted the 1881 S, but this was a 2 coin set and had to purchase the 1883 O as well.

The Reverse of the 1881 S seems to be dull and lifeless, but it is Semi Proof Like.

@robec , whey you say "coming my way", does that mean it's now part of your collection?

I love the looks of that Merc.

Was that from the recent HA auction? They had a couple 2 coin lots with toned Morgans. I remember seeing this lot or something very similar.

The S is one of the nicest toned Morgans I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing.

I have often been intrigued by toning on one side and not the other. I wonder what kind of chemical change occurs with the mint bag contacting the silver? Or, if that was even the case?? This coin obviously did not travel far.

    Found this...
Silver dollars may acquire beautiful toning for any number of reasons. First, if a coin rests against the side of an U.S. Mint bag for many years, the sulfur used as a preservative in the canvas may react with the silver oxide patina on the coin to form bright iridescent toning. The intensity of the colors depends to a large extent upon the humidity of the environment in which the bag was stored, the length of time that the bag remained undisturbed and the exact location of the coin within the bag.

Yes, this was from HA. It suddenly dawned on me that the auction was going on and when I signed in and looked, this coin set was up for auction right then, which I had been watching. I panicked when I saw, that lot was ending and bid. Only afterwards, did it dawn on me, that there would be the buyer commission added to the hammer price.

I think the Mercury proofs are among the sharpest looking coins around.

Yeah that 17.5 percent fee can really crimp one's wallet and bidding.
