Won this one literally minutes ago: 1904 Republic of Panama 2 1/2 centismos, AKA "the Panama pill" KM #1 NGC MS64 Mintage: 400,000 This coin was actually minted in the US, and, at 10mm in diameter, it's the smallest coin the US mint has ever produced. Can't wait to see it in person.
I've been on hiatus for a bit during some home (de)(re)construction but it's winding down. In some down time, I stopped at my local shop. Picked two errors out of the half-off bin. Thanks for checking them out! -L A Cracked Die: A "BIE" error. I had to look this one up and I learned a lot. It was marked XF/VF and comments welcome to the contrary.
I don't think that's a cracked die. It looks like an almost split planchet, the end result being that the entire obverse is basically a giant lamination. I'd put that in an Air-tite immediately. The BIE definitely looks like an honest VF35 to me.
Paul M: Thank you for you comments. It is sealed up, it went from the 2x2 I found it in to picture to AirTite. Thank you again, I appreciate your comments and time very much. -L
OK it's later This is a copper 1959 Collis Restrike Washington Born Virginia medal that is certified as MS64 Red Brown condition from NGC and has a mintage of only 5,019. This medal was struck by Albert Collis from a transfer die of the original die used to strike the undated (1792) "Washington Born Virginia" Medals. Once the restriking was completed, Collis donated the die to the American Numismatic Association, where it resides today. The design was originally intended for the Half Dollar and cent, but as rejected by the President, who did not want his portrait on the first United States Coinage. The medal features a left facing portrait of George Washington on the obverse and reads: George Washington Born Virginia Feb.11.1732 - ~
I've watched the modern commemorative silver dollars for awhile, and now and then I buy a couple that suit my fancy. My wife appreciates them as well, which encourages me to buy them. I've been collecting the low mintage issues, here are two that stood out to me. 1993-D Bill of Rights and the 2003 First Flight Centennial
I won a couple of Civil War Tokens from Lost Dutchman's (Matt) eBay listings. Really nice NGC slabs & Prompt safe shipping. Thanks Matt
You'll have to wait until after my vacation when I'll change my camera back to coin photography mode.
