Good point Doug. They may be Superman, I mean has anyone seen them with Superman. That might explain some of those finds.
Here are my latest. I have the 52 D and 63 in hand and just paid for the 58 D last night. The pictures of the 58 D are pretty sub par, but from what I can see I think the color is going to be absolutely phenomenal. I can't remember if I've posted this in this thread yet, but anyways here's the 52 D. It's a PCGS MS 64 FBL. Here is the 63. I'm not too crazy about the obverse toning, I don't think it adds anything to the coin, I'm just happy the luster shows through it and there is some nice color speckled near the rim. What I did like about this coin was the reverse and its bell lines. To me, the bell lines are full. I know there appears to be an area of incompleteness near the middle of the upper right set, that's just the way the light is hitting that area. In hand they look bold and full. At less than $20 I'm very pleased with this one since full bell lines on a 63 are very scarce. This is in a PCGS rattler as MS 64. Here are the seller's images of the 58 D. As you can see they're not very good. Probably scans. But it looks like the toning is going to be great with a wild reverse. I will post my own images as soon as I get it in hand.
Forgot about this one. Won this on GreatCollections and it came in the mail a few days ago. NGC MS 64
Got these for my type set. Otherwise I'd never have bought them Amazing the Pf 68 is worth more registry points at ngc then any other coin I own and it was one of the cheapest in my set!
Upgraded from an NGC PF66 to a PCGS PR67. Next upgrade is to a cameo. I have been infatuated with this particular variety since early in my collecting. Has a good cameo look in certain lighting, but not bold enough for the designation.
I don't think that is a defective planchet so much as it is a sea salvaged coin. I just purchased one in MS-60 (ish) for around $30 bucks
Here's a link to the shipwreck and the salvage. Pretty interesting http://www.eicships.info/ships/s815/s815_index.html
I'm excited about receiving mine. Should be here next week. There's not many cool shipwrecked coins that you can pick up for under $30 AND over 200 years old.
The coin is unusually nice for a 64. Notwithstanding the marks on the reverse, if you had asked us to guess the grade, I would have said MS65.
Possible but from the close up it looks like the date was put on top of an area that was already compromised. I have quite a few sea salvage coins and to me this looks different.
