I lived in Georgia during the 1972 election and the conservative Democrats wanted for George Wallace to have some votes at the convention to be the Democratic nominee. They scheduled the local referendums to be held in small, out-of-the-way towns so that "brother" George would have a good chance. The progressive Democrats were infuriated and flooded the local referendums so that the delegation to the national convention that year went as "uncomitted" except of 1/2 of one vote for Shirley Chisholm. Doesn't sound like Georgia does it?
I got this coin a few days ago. Let me know what you think, and help with grade? Also found out 1863 was the year Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address
Because I was responding to someone who was showing a "Shirley Chisholm For President" button and I remembered it, but being a newbie I did not attach the original post I was responding to. Sorry, I will learn.
First Merc purchase today My first time buying a merc but found this one in a shop local.. 1940 PF65 old ngc holder...Photos are not the best
No need to apologize. I thought it was a very interesting bit of local history that you wrote. Back in those days, it sounds like there were quite a few Georgians who were really fed up with the Lester Maddox/George Wallace crowd. And now that I think of it, Jimmy Carter succeeded Maddox as governor, right?
I couldn't pass this one up for $17. I have always liked this design, and it always evokes emotion related to my second hobby, family history (genealogy). My family immigrated before the Statue of Liberty existed (in the 1850s from Germany), but this is still a beautifully thought-out commemorative half, IMO.
