    1867 Shield Nickle

I've had this coin for a few weeks, but another thread mentioned the minting problems with Shield Nickels, I though I'd use the excuse to try a slightly different photographic technique:

A couple of IHC's courtesy of Rick Snow. This set is taking way too long. Been at it almost six years and I still need 22 more.

Sounds like you need to spend a lot more time and money on it. I am sure Rick would be very glad to oblige you. If you keep getting coins like that, it should be worth it.

great IHC's! what are they graded at? and are you trying for a graded set?

I would have thrown that 1883 back in the pile, I dont like the spot above the "U" on the obverse, thats all my eyes goto on that coin.

Hi Magman. The IHC set will be all 64-65 RD/RB. My large cents are all raw and most in the VF/XF range (still need 4 to complete the Dansco set), FE's AU, IHC's near gem, and Lincoln wheaties gem+. I thought I'd be done long ago but the pickier you are the longer it takes, you know?

Mat, I don't find that toning spot objectionable. It is not carbon or corrosion, merely a little odd toning, probably more to do with the composition than anything on the surface. Certainly better than a very dark eyesore. And in hand, at a fraction of that picture's size, it's barely noticeable. But it's great everyone has their likes and dislikes and I appreciate the feedback!

rlm, yes, Rick is very accommodating! I came very close to buying a lovely 1877 64BN he was showing and while I thought it over someone else snapped it up. You snooze...
    Lance.

edited to add: those two are 65RB and 64RD (1st and 2nd).

I got this one today at an antique store. This is my first Morgan and my first certified coin as well.

Your proofs are gorgeous! Why are they only PR64? They should be graded higher in my opinion. They are unforgettable!

I agree with you coin czar

I would have guessed they were both PR 66.

The color is some of the best I've seen on post 1950 proof Lincolns.
