I picked up this 1996 Kennedy half at my coin club meeting tonight. It was marked as a Die clash on the reverse EF45 by the consignor, but I think that it was struck through grease on the reverse, as well. You can see the clash below the eagle from foot to foot. Am I crazy on the struck through grease? The coin looks to be in too good of shape for it to be circulation wear, at least to me. Thoughts?
It may be struck through grease, but the level of planchet chatter on that coin indicates a very weak strike - so weak that I'm going to guess there was a mechanical malfunction with the press. By 1996, the mint had transitioned to lower profile devices on this series, so weak strikes don't manifest themselves as they did in earlier years - weakness in the eagle's head, arrow shafts, and hair detail. A weak strike on a 96 would manifest itself as a lot of planchet chatter on the obverse, particularly toward the rims, and weak lettering around the reverse, which is exactly what your coin exhibits. If it was just struck through grease, you might have one mushy area without the other indicators. I am NOT, however, an expert on errors, so someone may come along to correct may, but for now I'll say the coin has clashed dies and a weak strike, with the possibility of some areas struck through grease.
I got this for what I think was a fair deal on the Collectors Unleashed Auction House. A perfect item to go with my 32 bust half.
Very nice robec! I remember seeing that '55 toned proof on ebay -- I withheld a bid because the toning looked rather abnormal (AT?) -- I'm glad it worked out for you in the submission! On a side note, that '62 with sunset toning is gorgeous!
Never would have found this one without some help True View's Pictures on PCGS. Can't wait to see it in hand. Thanks again!
Ok call me stupid but what kind of coin is that? It reminds me of Captain America! Lol Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Standing Liberty Quarter with 2 types for that particular year One had stars on the reverse and the other one did not
That is a Type I bare brest obvers no stars reverse. And she's a beauty. Hard to find in low grades with the date still readable.
and the 4th coin for my seated quarter set. it is a little nicer then the overall grade i want for the set but it happens
haha, what can i say? I am 30 now, i figure if i keep with it i should have it completed by around 45. it seams most people do halves or dimes, so i want to do the quarters.
