One of the coolest Roman Republics I have aquired yet. Beats anything the U.S. mint has put out Sex. Pompeius Fostlus. 137 BC. O: Helmeted head of Roma right; jug behind. R: The shepard Faustulus discovering the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus; three birds in branches of fig tree behind. Crawford 235/1c; Sydenham 461a; Pompeia 1a. 19mm, 3.6g
Love it when we mix ancients and (so called) moderns. Enjoyin' the view guys. 'specially that '28......
i know i've posted these in other threads, but here's my latest... i just love showing them off! edward i penny, york mint, class 9b (1299-1301) george iii shilling, 1787 with semée of hearts
Thanks. I originally got it just to flip it... but it's really growing on me so I don't know anymore!!
Here's an 1890 Carson City Morgan I picked up about a month ago for a pretty good price. So far its my only CC.
Did you ever knowingly pay way too much for an eye appealing coin? I did, not too long ago. Here's a $200 half dollar I paid twice that for. I tried hard to get the seller down near sheet prices but he wouldn't budge. He knew what he had and what it was worth. Maybe I'm underwater a while. But the money's gone and I still have her so I'm pretty okay about it. Lance.
lkeigwin, I love the Seated Half (excellent eye appeal). Yes, beautifully toned coins often go for 1.5x to 2x to sometimes 3x bid sheet prices -- I see it all the time. It's all about eye appeal -- that always brings a stiff premium. Appealing toning patterns are unique and make populations of similar looking coins very low (unlike BU coins where you can go out and find another one very easily). And by the way, you stole that Stone Mountain! Superb acquisition, I love the toning on that. Is the long beach coin show an online auction ... or is it a "show up and buy live" event? There are just too many auctions around to keep up with them all, who has the time (or the money!)
1937 Mercury dime, possibly FSB The bottom quarter of the faces below the diagonal band is blurred. I couldn't really clear it up enough to tell if it is FSB. That is a gorgeous 37 merc.
Long Beach has auctions going on from big auction companies but its a large coin show that goes on 3x a year.
Most of those auctions to me are for big boys/big spenders....I only stick with ebay. Just this past week alone I have gotten, what averages $80-$200 coins on ancient coin sites for almost less then half on the bay. 11 ancients for less then $150 total in one week? Insane!!! Though I think tonight the ones I am watching are gonna jump pretty high.
I think it might have something to do with the lighting. I'll take another picture of it from a different angle later.
You can see my newest here. It's a German 1940-A 10pf Reichskreditkassen (Military Occupation Coin). http://www.cointalk.com/t178994/
