Purchased this little beauty. I'm not much of a copper junky, I don't hate them but I am not in love with them... regardless, I need it to finish my complete type set.

One of the most faked versions of this ancient, with this reverse. Thankfully I found a legit one under all the fakes. Got it cheap too.

My newest acquisition is an 1873 Three Cent Nickel. Does anybody know how exactly the U.S. Mint handled proofs back in the 1800s? I can't imagine it was anything close to how it is today obviously. And if there's a book on this aspect of mint history, can anybody recommend a good one?

JohN Dannreuther is currently finishing up the first volume for publishing in his 3(I believe) volume work on US proof coin history. I am looking forward to this greatly. Just hearing him talk about some of the things he's discovered is fascinating. I believe the first volume is on the gold coinage.

Nuthin for nuthin but I heard a story from a dealer friend (or was it Treashunt?) who said that a guy bought some supposedly originally sealed proof sets (from that era. Can't remember which year) and when he opened them they were filled with washers. Open the box and protect yourself.
