FWIW, my own example (a nice F-something) has medal reverse. Got it many years ago and never noticed that when I bought it, nor the many times I’ve seen it since in my Dansco. But who would check? “Everybody knows” it’s supposed to be coin reverse, right?
How long did that take? Did the wood have stain on it? Great looking tone!! I'd flip it and match the obverse.
Consciously or not, most of us learn to turn US coins top over bottom to arrive at the orientation we want with a minimum of effort. The medallic reverse is usually discovered accidentally, when the coin looks upside down after flipping it that way.
won this one at the coin club raffle this week. 1942 S Netherlands East Indies one-tenth Gulden. The wheat cent is included for size reference.
I was more attracted to this than to spending the same money on a higher grade more common commemorative.
Today's cherry pick from the Baltimore show. I ran into John Call ,and had some fun with him......I showed him this slab.... playing dumb....he sez thats a 1891 cc spitting eagle top 100 vam! I was like where?.... It was good to meet him finally, and shake hands....I stopped by Toughcoins Mike wasn't around. I also am always on the lookout for these and photo grade slabs...my dealer freind just took it in trade, im guessing he didn't know it was a spiting eagle vam.
