Today I got a 1898 10$ for spot+8%. Common date, probably cleaned, EF details? I’m happy with it anyway. It’s a type I’ve wanted for a long time.
I think the reverse was from a retired matte proof die it has the diagnostics on the reverse but not the obverse
Doesn't gotta be. There are a few early 102As with the XXX edge. I doubt this is one of them, though.
Yours is a later die state. The cracks around the date indicate that. And there’s some debate about your first statement. NGC pop indicates a handful of xxx O.102a coins, but I contend they’re wrong, most likely. Only because I owned one of them once. And there were no X’s to be seen. Once before I owned one in AU53 that had no die cracks, and I swear at the right angle you could see a couple shadows of x’s, but alas, I tried it at PCGS and NGC and neither granted it to XXXX edge.
Here's a PCGS 102a XXX with the cracks at the date. The reverse crack is in its infancy. Although the coin isn't (and never has been) mine I saw it before it was slabbed. And yes, the designation is deserved.
Like Doubting Thomas, I’d have to see it in hand myself before I believe it. I’ve bought many that looked like this and none had X’s.
Nothing special, but it was free. Who doesn’t like free silver. Put my jacket and a pair of pants in my dryer for a short cycle, and this was sitting there waiting for me, perfectly positioned, when I took them out
