Here we go again. Picked this one up this evening... I swear it's not an adiction...I can stop any time I choose. Yeah, right!
This was not a US issue (strictly speaking) at the time it was struck, but I include this in my US quarter type set as these were produced entirely due to the influence of the US, which culminated in Hawaii becoming a US territory just 17 years later. The 1883-84 (all dated 1883) Hawaiian issues were designed by Charles Barber and were struck by the San Francisco mint on US planchets to ensure uniformity between Hawaiian and US coinage. Despite the later melting down of the majority of the quarter mintage, many mint state survivors exist of this denomination due to the discovery of a hoard. For me, that Hawaiian quarter is very interesting and struck a chord with me. So I rifled through a small box of foreign coins. And there it was. So, I guess this is my newest find.
Damn, just damn, Woo Hoo, and eternal thanks to the esteemed member that graciously sold this to me . . . . . Z .
I know, take it out of the 2 x2 to photograph. But the guy I got this from probably put it in the holder a few days before I bought it. Dialed down the light a bit to make sure no glare. I think easily an XF. Old school with a bit of luster and everything.
