I really liked the ‘43-O gold piece, but it was gone by the time I got there. Enjoy it! If you snooze, you lose.
I’m really excited about this 1888 gold eagle. PCGS has graded 57 others at MS62, 8 at MS63 and one at MS63 plus. That’s it. NGC has 46 others at MS62 at 4 at MS63. That’s it. This presentation comes via of Mike at ToughCoins!
But before it came to be... From report of Director of the Mint dated Jan 27, 1851 to President Milliard Fillmore (accessed via Google Books) "Prior to the discovery of the California mines, The deposit at ... (Philadelphia)... and the New Orleans mint Were almost entirely in foreign coins, which, being already refined, were fit to be passed into ingots for coinage...". So it is quite likely that this quarter eagle was previously another coin from perhaps Mexico or Europe.
Can’t see the obverse but I think it’s an 1838 or 39 from DavidKhan I had seen if I’m not mistaken. Nice looking crusty coin Oh nevermind I just saw your original post. @Nathan401 Yep that’s the one... nice !
