Thanks Paddy! I haven't really looked at that coin under a scope yet.....but I will look when it comes out of the deposit box. Maybe I will get luckier (i stole this coin at auction).
Well getting up at 4 am by 9 pm my eyes just aren't as sharp as they could be....plus add 65 years to the 17 hour day. I just found two new varieties as soon As time allows I want to send them in .
Not up to snuff when compared to what @RedRaider has here, but this one cost me only $21.51 at ebay last night (seller's photos). Perhaps a little rough, but excellent detail, IMHO.
I see all kinds of wonderful color shades all over both sides. I think if the photographer had captured that better you would have had stiffer competition for it.
The photos on eBay were a bit out of focus, helping me land this for $5. It's so reflective that I wondered if it was a Proof. Then I remembered the S mint mark. Doh! Here it is in a darker relief. This shows the flow of the cartwheel luster better. NGC has a guide value for MS67 FB at $675, and MS66 FB at $165. There seems to be a bit of a disconnect between what they list and what you can actually pay.
eBay was kind. I got these two for barely over face value. When we're talkin' a couple of bucks, I don't have to worry about whether the toning is natural, only if I think it's fun. (I got them from a dealer I've been happy with, so I think they are, in fact, natural. And, why go to the time and trouble of toning a coin that sells for a dollar? Not a good business model, that.)
Well, Jason @physics-fan3.14 hooked me up with a sweet deal on this group of attractive common Mercs and a few Barbers. I'm a sucker for some nice Mercs. I figured most would be junk Silver, but I was pleasantly surprised that almost all the coins are attractive higher grades, some with stunning toning!!!! I've known it for a long time, but just another example that Jason has an exceptional eye for quality.
Just picked these up today: 1927 Buffalo Nickel (will go in my 1927 set for my grandma's birth year) 1923 Buffalo Nickel Note: strong obverse die clash under the chin EDIT: Just adding some clearer/better images of the clash. Super clear in these new photos:
