Stacks in New York acquired a large coin accumulation with lots of mid grade type coins. It’s my understanding that they made a deal with NGC to certify them with the Stacks pedigree. I think it’s more of a marketing gimmick than a true pedigree like Newman. The holders don’t appear to carry a premium in the market and some on this forum have accused them of being overgraded. Personally I have no issue with them. The one Stacks coin I have, an AU58 copper nickel Indian cent, looks fine for the grade, and the half cent looks nice too.
I wasn't familiar with the special NGC Stacks slabs until I saw the half cent, so that was more than I knew about them. I bought the coin, not the slab, and the price seemed right as well. I figured, well, some correlation to Stack's can't hurt, but I'm not surprised that it carries no extra weight in the market. I just wanted an NGC graded Draped Bust half cent. Done.
I have been wanting to add a Peace Dollar to my type set for a long time. It would seem like that should be easy, but the series is full of blast white dip monsters and I wanted one with some character. Also I wanted a somewhat better date as the 22’s and 23’s seem common and boring to me. So finally I found one worth pulling the trigger on for a modest CAC premium. When I opened the mail today I wasn’t disappointed.
Here’s another new type set addition. I like both the look of Barbers in higher grades as well as their scarcity. There aren’t many of these around even in AU.
When I was a kid, back in the sixties, the NY Times Sunday edition had a coin section and Stacks was a big seller there. Bought some Morgans from them back then. I still have them.......
There’s a lot of crap but some decent stuff if you dug through it. I bought quite a few. Most were cac approved too. Anything that didn’t sell I crossed to pcgs
I don’t agree with this one. I see zero trace of wear. In hand. Pics suck. It’s a semi pl luster bomb too scratches are die polish lines. I’ve sent it 3 times. Always went straight all au last one was a bs 55 so I had to do it again back at 58 . I figured it at 62.
Finally cleaned my desk off. Felt like shooting this one again for practice since they are so small and the colors make it even harder.
Bought this last month but left it on the back burner(like everything else I buy...). (Seller's Pictures)
