A 1900-O for my Barber half Dansco and 1959-D. The 59-D is a duplicate for me, but for only $15 I couldn't pass up what looks like a solid 65FBL.
I had hoped from the seller‘s photos that this might be uncirculated. (Plus, they said it was.) Well, maybe not. The price was right and it’s a very attractive quarter.
That is one of the prettiest SLQs I have ever seen. How do you grade it? AU 55 or 58? I can see a wee bit of wear on the highest points and what appears to be mint luster in all the fields. Almost makes me suspect some cleaning has occurred sometime in the past.
I suspected that too, but if they did they missed the natural-looking dirt in the 2 and 8, and other letters. I am not experienced in this. Can you clean it and still leave embedded dirt?
Yes they used an ultrasonic machine , sort of like a jewlery cleaner that virbrates the dirt loose, however it doesn't always get all of the dirt, and it leaves traces of evidence around the devices. There's several others areas that show embedded dirt that the ultrasonic didn't break loose., also the carbon spots on the reverse... it faded the somewhat but didn't remove them....they shall return in time. The ultrasonic machine is used by a jeweler to remove like soap, and other crud from around a stone in a ring,or piece of jewelry. It also removes the polish used to buff a piece of jewelry. The solution most times used is common household ammonia. By using this the sniffer can detect the coin has been cleaned, most probably why the coin isn't stabbed.
Got out metal detecting today, 33F when I started but the ground is still unfrozen. Lot's of snot but I managed a contribution worthy find, (lol). Also found a wheat and Indian cent.
