"I just got this 1783 Piece of Eight from the El Cazador Ship Wreck. An inexpensive piece of history. Of course it has been cleaned." X115, From one prune picker to another, that is one fine specimen. Where in the world did you find this piece ? A coin collectors dream. Dave
thank you. I found that on ebay. I paid about $80. even that is a little high but sellers need to make there money too. there is quite a few on ebay. the photo on the ngc site matched the photo of the coin so I felt safe buying it.
My latest ancient of empress Herennia Etruscilla. She kinda looks like a ape but most of her portraits on coins do. Herennia Etruscilla (249 - 253) AR Antoninianus O: HER ETRVSCILLA AVG Draped bust right on crescent, hair in straight lines with long plait carried up the back of head, stephane in hair. R: PVDICITIA AVG Pudicitia, veiled, seated left, drawing veil with right hand, transverse scepter in left. 23mm 4.2g RIC IV, Part III, 59b (Trajan Decius)
next on my list is an empress coin and a republic coin. nice addition to your collection. if i had seen it before you, i would've snatched it up before you could! lol
Do you think they were cleaned? I'm not experienced in checking for anything like that. And the store I go to seems to be pretty honest.
99.9% sure those Peace Dollars have been cleaned, but because those aren't dates that command much of a premium in circulated grades, the cleaning doesn't detract from the value. Cleaned or original, they're a great addition to any collection! Nice NEWPs! :thumb: -Brian
This is my latest aquisition. I don't collect these, but once I saw this, I had to have it. The thought of this coin landing into someone's collection who doesn't appreciate the fine artistic quality of our US Mint was unacceptable to me. I borrowed some money from a fellow collector and plucked down the money. THe dealer I bought if off of is a friend of mine and he had an interesting story to go with it. I was called by an elderly lady who told him that she had a few coins she would like to sell him. When they met, she presented 5 little coin envelopes. In each envelope was a different coin all from around this year. THey were her mothers and had been sitting in a dresser drawer for over 90 years!!!! My pics don't do this coin justice as this is this fine yellow toning around the coin. Comparing this coin with other similar coins from this series, it appears that the dies may have been in late stage. Other than a less than stellar strike, the coin exudes its natural luster with only a nick here or there. I can't say what the long term holds for this coin, but right now it stays in my collection. Where else can you find an untouched/newly found 90 year old coin? Can you see why I had to have it.
