Nice looking Jefferson MS -66 FS ? I can't tell for sure but the mm looks to be repunched , looks to be close to the 42 D rpm -002. Is it a repunch or MD? Is there a die gouge over the last U in Pluribus ? Not the 42 D/horz. D.
Went to a nice local show today and was a little surprised with a couple things. First was the lack of truly nice colorful toners. Out of about 50 dealers I could count on one hand all of the coins I would consider to have superb color. Second thing that surprised me was the amount of problem free barber halves in Fine or better condition with nice eye appealing, smooth grey color. I typically don't see more than 10 of that type of barber half when I go to a local show, but today I spotted well over 20. If I had more money to spend I would have loved to scoop up many more of them or a couple of the scarcer dates. But I am still happy to have been able to take these 2 home.
First purchase of 2017...not real sure why--I'm just a little nuts about 1827, I guess. Just received and haven't busted out of the slab yet.
The coins aren't new just the slabs. I've gotten to the point where it's not worth sending to the TPG.
No, I much prefer raw. That way they match the rest of my 50 plus year old collection. Plus, that way I can actually see the entire coin, not just the obverse and reverse.
I got a few 1916 German East Africa (DOA) 20 Heller coins but this Type A-A Brass is the most interesting of the lot to me. It look like it may be a heterogeneous Brass Copper mix. I will do some analysis on it when I have the time (maybe tomorrow) to see if the yellowish spots are brass (Cu and Zn) and the copper color spots are just Cu. I have never read about that being documented but it seems possible to me considering the conditions these coins were made in.
