Norris Cotton Mills, Cateechee S.C, Brass, C/A, 34mm 8.1 grams, thin planchet, counter stamped It appears the counter stamp punch slipped a bit or the token was re-punched and the punch not properly aligned with the old mark. Also, if you look below the "D" in GOOD on the reverse you'll see light hitting the push out. The counter stamp may be from Woodside Mills of Greenville, one of several companies that bought the Norris Mills. Daniel Keating Norris also named the town Cateechee after a Choctaw Indian woman named Issaqueena. She was captured by the Cherokee and taken to Keowee where they changed her name to Cateechee. One day she found out the Cherokee were planning an attack on the Star Fort where her lover, a trader, happened to be staying. She rode 96 miles to warn the fort. Today the town where the fort still exists is called Ninety-Six. There are quite a few variations on this story including an aftermath where the Cherokee were chasing Cateechee and she jumped a waterfall and hid somewhere until they gave up looking for her. Well, I suppose leaping a waterfall might get easier with pissed off Cherokees behind you. That waterfall still exists today and is called Issaqueena Falls. Issaqueena was Cateechee's real name before the Cherokee changed it. It's a cool story but just too too many variations to it. Sources: Numismatics of South Carolina Merchant Trade Tokens--Tony Chibbaro. And the Interwebbie.
