Ireland Loyalists opposed to the independence of the South. This went on in the late 1960s and early 1970s with little success. This wasn&#039;t an &quot;official&quot; effort by the UK, but was promoted by Loyalist merchants and private citizens. Some shop keepers refused to sell Irish products or accept Irish (Eire) money. Irish coins were also routinely defaced during those years. I have several coins with different slogans on them referencing the same boycott, as well as some defaced pieces. I think I posted one earlier on this thread.</p><p><br /></p><p>The second coin is stamped by two different Loyalist paramilitaries, the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force), and the UDA (Ulster Defence Association). These double stamps are unusual, especially by these two opposing groups. While both were Loyalist / Protestant organizations, they were also rivals who at times would attack each other over loyalty, territory, political differences, or some other real or perceived slight. This was common for the Nationalist / Catholic paramilitaries too, particularly the bitter, hostile feud between the IRA and INLA.</p><p><br /></p><p>The seller got these coins as part of a job lot at an auction in Portrush, Co.
