Construction began in 1940 and in 1941 it was renamed for Lt. John J. Goodfellow Jr. He was lost in WWI when flying in France in in an observation aircraft. The base went on to continue training piliots until 1958 when cryptological training began. In 1966 the base began to train all branches cryptologists and in 1975 the runway was closed. When Chanute AFB was closed in 1993, it&#039;s firefighter training program was moved to Goodfellow.
