I got the text on the obverse of the GGIE token I bought yesterday translated "Isla Del Tesoro" is Treasure Island, "Pedazos de Ocho" is Piece of Eight. The Golden Gate International Exposition was located on Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay.
I usually am not a fan of Hobo Tokens on the Buffalo Nickel, but I look at this one, and find myself saying, "Wow!!!" It is beautiful....
Nice tokens Galen! The Maloney piece is designated either NY630AU-1a (Copper) or NY630AU-1b (Brass) in the Fuld reference. The copper is considered an R-2 and the brass an R-4. The R.S. Torrey is ME100A-2a 0r ME100A-2b (Copper/brass). The 2a is R-4 and the 2b is an R-9 or extremely rare. The reverse die on both varieties are the same and are designated #1200. Both the Maloney and Torrey tokens are store cards. Your third one is a Patriotic CWT and designated 37/434a (Copper at R-1) or 37/434b (Brass at R-4). BTW, both dies were cut by William Bridgens a New York City diesinker. Bruce
I found this counterstamp listed on eBay recently and decided to bid on it. I felt that it would go for a good price so I bid accordingly. My max bid was going to be $235.00 and even at that I wasn't sure I'd get it. To my great surprise it closed at only $58.00 so I feel as though I got a real bargain. You just never know with this type of exonumia...sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. Although no one has figured out who W.C. Durkee was, it's listed by Brunk (D-628) on one example, an 1803 Large Cent. Mine is on the same date and type of coin so it may be the one he lists or a second example. I did a quick search and came up with a Boston pharmacist with this name from the later years of the 19th century. At this point he's only a possible issuer so I still have a lot of work to do Due to the heavy wear on the coin and the pristine look of the stamp, I feel as though the name was added many years after the coin was minted. It wouldn't be a stretch to date the issue to the 1870s / 1880s or even a bit later. In any case, this is one of clearest and well struck stamps I have in my collection. Now all I have to do is find out who Durkee was. Bruce
My latest catch Edward VII coronation cooper medal by G. Frampton Not sure how many were minted. If someone knows please message me.
Great detail dwhiz and a very nice hobo for sure. I never had a great interest in collecting hobos in the past, but the more I see ones like yours the more interest I have in them. Bruce
Really nice coronation medal MyHobby...and in the original presentation case. That adds value for sure. Thanks for showing it. Bruce
I guess this can be a token. One Doge Coin. Shibe Mint, Ontario, Copper, M/A, 39mm, 28.9 grams, Much Wow, currenty .0008 of a cent. Sorry about all the camera reflections.
copper bullion it still fits with the theme of this thread. It seems that there is a push to try to convince people that investing in copper bullion is one way to go if silver and gold is to rich for you. They have them in everything from 1/4 oz. and up. Most of what I have seen and have are aimed at the preppers/ 2nd amendment sold at gun shows etc. Have to get the pic's redone and post them. Most are very nice looking
Oh Im keeping an eye on this thread. And I will be back to post some pictures. My wife has quite the collection of cutouts and love tokens. Its uhhh the only jewelry I ever seem to get her. She has atleast 30 different cutouts. Not so many love tokens. I keep most of those for myself. Hers have her initials. My daughters all wear cutout pendants and ear rings. My dog wears a buffalo nickel collar. The wife has a belt with coins fastened to the leather. And my wife finally gave the ok to have wedding bands made from Canadian Sterling. I think the wreath would look lovely around the out side of the bands
I got this counterstamp from the same seller who sold me the Durkee stamp I posted earlier. I picked up this one only because it's cool looking and Daniel is my son's name. His reaction was "yeah, what ever" Geez, kids! I guess I'm not going to leave my collection to him...or my daughter...or my other daughter...or my wife...or my dog. O.K., that settles it, I'm going to take it with me. Bruce
Whatever became of Alan Herbert's coin collection? You'd think that would be a landmark auction just for the name even if the pieces were modest.
