    1930s Empire State Building
    and State Seal Medal

    1930sEmpireStateBldgOBV.jpg

    1930_sEmpireStateBldgREV.jpg

I don't know much about this medal, who or exactly when it was made. Maybe a souvenir sold within the building.
It is bronze and about an inch in diameter.

    1930sEmpireStateBldgArtwork.jpg

The Chrysler Building (left) is an Art Deco–style skyscraper located on the East Side of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, Manhattan.
The building was formally opened on May 27, 1930. It is my favorite skyscraper in the world.
At 1,046 feet, the structure was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931.

The Empire State Building (right) is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Construction completed in 1931 and opened on May 1st, thirteen and a half months after the first steel beam was erected.
The building has a roof height of 1,250 feet and stands a total of 1,454 feet tall, including its antenna.
Its name is derived from "Empire State", the nickname of New York.

The site of the Empire State Building, located on the west side of Fifth Avenue between West 33rd and 34th Streets, was originally part of an early 18th century farm.
In the late 1820s, it came into the possession of the prominent Astor family, with John Jacob Astor's descendants building the Waldorf–Astoria Hotel on the site in the 1890s.

The original design of the Empire State Building was for a 50-story office building.
However, after fifteen revisions, the final design was for a 86-story 1,250-foot building, with an airship mast on top.
This ensured it would be the world's tallest building, beating the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street, two other Manhattan skyscrapers under construction at the time that were also vying for that distinction.

    1933 Hoover Exhibit
    1933 Century Of Progress
    Exposition Medal

    1933HooverExhibitCenturyOfProgressExpoMedalGallery.jpg

The obverse of this medal depicts a poor woman being freed of the drudgery of housecleaning by some angelic figure. She is so grateful as she goes to her knees with the old broom laying on the floor beside her.
No better way to win her love than to give her a Hoover for Christmas!

    1933HooverExhibitCenturyOfProgressExpoMedalArtwork.jpg

The vacuum cleaner business was booming in the early 1920's up until the 1960's.
Sure, they still sell them but not like in the old days.
If you're as old as me, you would remember the occasional door to door salesmen who would call on mother while dad was off at work. Encyclopedia salesmen, The Fuller Brush man, Life Insurance Agents would be showing up, but none was more exciting than the sweeper sellers.

Hoover was a household name and most every house had one. I liked the ones with the headlights.

What a way to a housewife's heart! Hoover was no marketing dummy being a major exhibitor at the 1933 Chicago Century of Progress Exposition or World's Fair either.

These women surround a 1930's Hoover as if it were reading them poetry.

    1937 POCAHONTAS COAL
    Bronze Medal

    1.25 in. diam

    1937POCAHONTAScoalMercerCoOBV.jpg

    1937POCAHONTAScoalMercerCoREV.jpg

This Bronze medal also celebrates the 100 year founding of Mercer County W. VA. 1837-1937, Which is near the border of Northern Virginia.
It measures 1.25 inches in diameter. On the obverse, Pocahontas is standing in front of coal hopper railroad cars. It shows a side view of the larger-than-life Pocahontas statue, which is one of the favorite attractions of Jamestown Island in VA.

    1937POCAHONTAScoalMercerCoArtwork1.jpg

Finished in 1913, her hands are worn a bright copper color because so many visitors have held them while posing for photos. A reproduction of the statue was given to the British people by the governor of Virginia to adorn Pocahontas’ burial grounds at St. George's Church in Gravesend, England.

On the reverse, The Art Deco-styled Mercer County Court House at Princeton, West Virginia, in the Bluestone Region of southern West Virginia.

Pocahontas was a Powhatan Native American woman, born around 1595, known for her involvement with English colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. In a well-known historical anecdote, she saved the life of Englishman John Smith, by placing her head upon his own at the moment of his execution.
Pocahontas later married John Rolfe, and they were among the ancestors of many of the First Families of Virginia. She changed her name to Rebecca Rolfe and died while visiting England in 1617 in her very early twenties.

Pocahontas is a town in Tazewell County, Virginia, United States. It was named for Chief Powhatan's daughter, Pocahontas, who lived in the 17th-century Jamestown Settlement.
Pocahontas Coalfield, is located in Mercer County/McDowell County, West Virginia and Tazewell County, Virginia.
In a later time, this would be just a few hills east of the Hatfield and McCoy's feuding grounds.

As the availability and fame of high-quality Pocahontas bituminous coal increased, economic forces took over. Coal operators and their employees settled dozens of towns in southern West Virginia, and in the next few years, as coal demand swelled, some of them amassed fortunes.

The countryside was soon sprinkled with tipples, coke ovens, houses for workers, company stores and churches. In the four decades before the Crash of 1929 and subsequent Depression, these coal towns flourished.

One example was the small community of Bramwell, West Virginia, which in its heyday boasted the highest per capita concentration of millionaires in the country.

Rough Riders Medal ~ Teddy Roosevelt Tampa Bay

    1978TeddyRooseveltRoughRiderTampaMedalOBV.jpg

    1978TeddyRooseveltRoughRiderTampaMedalREV.jpg

On the obverse is a portrait of Teddy Roosevelt, who was named Colonel of the Rough Riders by Pres. Mckinley.
In 1898 the Rough Riders staged in Tampa, Florida prior to departure for war in Cuba.
Today the Rough Riders is a social and service organization, which was founded in Tampa in 1978.

The reverse side of this token shows the landmark minarets of Tampa.
The minarets were originally a feature of the Tampa Bay Hotel, which was a 500+ room resort hotel opened in 1891 by Henry B. Plant near the terminus of his rail line.

    1978TeddyRooseveltRoughRiderTampaMedalArtwork.jpg
Today the minarets along with the Henry B. Plant Museum are a part of the University of Tampa’s campus scene.

    1978TeddyRooseveltRoughRiderTampaMedalArtwork2.jpg

The token measures about 1 1/2" in diameter and appears to made of aluminum.

The water flower museum in St Michael's Maryland they have these sleek boats and punt guns. What a weapon, and yes the kill the entire flock.
Ive had a chance to pull the triger on a single shot 10 ga. Goose gun.....first one needs to be able to lift 30 lbs of barrel and swing with it as you do...next per plan a emergency dentist appointment. As when you do lift swing and pull.....don't forget to hold on! That's very important! Recoil is like out of body experience.....when it hits you....you wish you were out of your body as your shoulder is now mush.
I'll keep my 870.....a never miss.

    1909 Hudson Fulton Celebration
    Citizens Committee Medal

    HK-380 looped

    1909HudsonFultonCitizensCommitteeMedalREV.jpg

    1909HudsonFultonCitizensCommitteeMedalOBV.jpg

The obverse shows a standing female with "Wings of Thought" head gear, outstretched arms with Fulton's Clermont in left hand and Hudsons Half Moon in the other.

In the background it has the New York Skyline. Legend reads HUDSON-FULTON - CELEBRATION.

The reverse shows the conjoined bust of Henry Hudson & Robert Fulton in the center. Legend reads HENRY HUDSON 1609 ROBERT FULTON 1807 and the year 1909.

This medal is listed in the Hibbler Kappen So Called Dollar catalog as HK-380 and is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. It would have been part of a ribbon at one time, worn by a committee member and retains the loop.

The Celebration was created and organized by the Celebration Commission, consisting of a large group of wealthy and influential New Yorkers, such as J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and others.
The Commission, over the course of its long planning period (from 1905 to 1909), established dozens of committees to oversee every detail of the event.

This is my postcard looks like with a Dutch girl and Uncle Sam in the forefront of the Hudson River parade.

    1909HudsonFultonCitizensCommitteeMedalArtwork.jpg

There are many resources online about the historic celebration and I include my medals in my Exposition collection.
1909 was a fantastic year! In the East we had the Hudson Fulton Celebration and out west in Washington State we had the Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition.

    1,000,000 Square Miles $15,000,000

These visitors must have had a whale of a time!
A full size "Blue whale" and skeleton of the same were on display in the taxidermy exhibit.

The massive "Obervation Wheel", later named the "Ferris Wheel" after its creator on site could carry as many as 2000 people at a time.

Scott Joplin was there, Thomas Edison, Geronimo and even Helen Keller gave a speech!
I suggest you meet me in Saint Louie, Louie "Meet Me at the Fair" and find some reading on your own. There's too much to write here.

I do find myself watching Meet Me in St. Louis with Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien around Christmas time every year.
Yes, I confess, I have it recorded.
A musical film released in 1944.
Divided into a series of seasonal vignettes, starting with Summer 1903, it relates the story of a year in the life of the Smith family in St. Louis, leading up to the opening of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, more commonly referred to as the World's Fair, in the spring of 1904.
