Gents, I'm generally impressed with the details that mint engravers of old have put into some of the coinage and tokens around the world. However today I received a purchase that blows the best of the best out of the water. The photos to follow were taken by my cheap cellphone. No post processing done on the images. I will let the photos speak for themselves. What's amazing is that this piece was made in 1868. What's even more amazing is the size of this piece. I know a few of you may have seen this design before, but there are probably many who haven't. Enjoy. Click the images to enlarge to geta better appreciation of the details . . . Z
What's truly jaw dropping is the size of this particular piece. It wouldn't be a big deal to get this level of detail in a struck planchet that was 16" in diameter or larger, although the effort would be admirable. What makes this piece astounding is that the dies were created around the time of our civil war without modern production techniques like laser or CNC engraving. Presumably, all this detail was created by hand into a die this size . . . . The subject piece is on the top. And folks fuss about full steps, full hair detail, full bell lines, or fully split bands . . . . Z
Great to see so many pictorial Medals and Tokens, lookin' good! I don't have anything to add today but I'll be back to post more Tokens soon. I'm here as I just received a California Medal that was once glued to something as you can see on the back side. It's a bit different as Liberty has such a big head, not sure why but I got a spot for it in my collection!
