Leopold Wiener is a rather well known sculptor, and engraver of coins and medals. He was born in 1823, and died in 1891 in Brussels, Belgium. He came from a very talented family of engravers and medallists, as his brothers Jacques and Charles were also active in the art. Most of the coinage of Belgium from the 2nd half of the 19th century was designed by Leopold Wiener, often bearing his initials "LW".
This is British Historical Medal #10 by J. Kirk. It commemorated the marriage of George III to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (whom he met on his wedding day!) in 1761. 36mm in copper. NGC MS65RB.
One of the most beautiful medals I have ever seen, and the state of preservation is just beyond belief. I love the "satin" look to the busts. Stunning!!!
Wolfhounds, first battlion 27th infantry regiment (25th inf. Div.) Cu Chi base camp Vietnam. VN1160a, plated brass, 21mm, 4.3 grams. Long before the Vietnam war (1918) the 27th infantry was part of the Siberian Intervention; fighting with the White Russians against the Bolsheviks. It was the White Russians who nicknamed 27th Inf. the Wolfhounds for the ferocity of their fighting.
These four tokens are stock designs offered by the private Patrick Mint in Santa Rosa, CA. You pick one of these four...or others... and have your personal message, business information, wedding anniversary, or anything else custom stamped on the reverse. These particular four were struck between 1998 and 2001, but the mint goes back at least into the mid 1970s. I'm not sure if they're still active today or not. - 1793 Chain Cent / 27mm zinc/copper. Also, 1,500 struck in silver. - Chief Onepapa (Running Antelope) The Sioux Chief depicted on the Series 1899 U.S. Silver Certificate. Also 27mm zinc/copper. Mintage of 1,000 plus 500 in silver. -1854 pattern Flying Eagle Cent / 27mm zinc/copper. Also 1,500 struck in silver. - 1792 Silver-Center Cent pattern / Two varieties with or without silver plug. Yes they are. http://www.patrickmint.com/toksamp.html they are currently selling a package deal of new and older tokens.
That's where I got these tokens Circus...a lot buy of various tokens. The company actually issued a reference of all the tokens that they had struck early on...1976/77 or somewhere in that time frame. I have a copy somewhere but can't seem to locate it at the moment. Thanks for the link. Bruce
Apparently they go back to 1957: "Coiners and Numismatics since 1957." I always thought they got started during the bicentennial.
I did too longnine. Their reference dealt with pieces struck around the bicentennial. I didn't know they've been around so long. I have other tokens they struck so will have to look them up and post pics. Bruce
