Still haven't attended one of their shows, dwhiz. I talked to a couple of my friends at the coin club, but because of the distance we thought it was too much of a hike for a day trip. Bruce
Last night I took more pictures. I think I just about have my entire token collection photographed! Now I just need to go through and edit the images and update my catalog, this will be a nice project for today. In this post I wanted to share with the group this recent purchase: James Curto is the godfather of military tokens. He was the first to start cataloging and writing about them. For a while I would occasionally see his books pop up on eBay but I never considered them "must haves" as his work was older and superseded by Cunningham. I should have taken a side shot, this volume is much slimmer than Cunningham's, about 1/2" to Cunningham's 3 1/4". Curto's work attempts to be much broader in subject matter including cataloging medals, challenge coins, wooden nickels, etc. Slowly I began to get interested in actually purchasing some of his work - just to see what it was and if nothing else to add it to my collection. When this signed copy came available I couldn't resist. Interesting to note some of the differences between Cunningham and Curto. Cunningham organizes tokens by state/country then alphabetically while Curto goes by type such as Airfields, Arsenals, Barracks, Camps, Forts, etc. With the addition of the above book, my military token reference library now includes four volumes!
It's great to have reference books that go with your collection. Even the old outdated ones are of value. This one's especially cool because it's signed by the author. Nice addition to your library, Jack. Bruce
I have one of these too. I have been unable to find out what it is. Mine looks like silver uncirculated commemorative, but no weight printed anywhere on it. “Copy” is in raised letters. Odd, huh? My son found it in a miniature straw purse in a package of an older Barbie doll and clothes at a thrift store. Really wondering what it is. It looks like yours.
I took many photos from last night and still haven't got through them all yet. I'm working through a group of about 60 tokens, most stateside, a few overseas. These tokens were waiting for new flips, their last owner kept them in stapled 2x2s which don't work well for photographs. A sampling of some photos from last night: Bolling AFB, District of Columbia, plastic, 28mm (my first & only from D.C.!)
I spent a little time editing photos tonight...so many to go through! I don't feel like updating my catalog tonight, I'll save that pleasure for later. Here are a few: This token from Sheppard is in beautiful uncirculated condition and should be reshot with a lot more light since it's black color really hides it.
I have an installer at the house today, so it was a nice opportunity to finish editing my photos. Here are a few images. Later this afternoon I will finish updating my catalog. Here are a few tokens:
