Thanks Circus. I never thought of it that way but it makes sense. And being in Chinatown, that game room probably is a big tourist attraction.
I struggle with very reflective coins as well. I have several aluminum tokens in uncirculated condition that are so bright that they have to be shot in a way that obscures the actual appearance.
Sometimes it works well with the flash off (camera), if there's enough light. And other times it works better with the flash on (at an angle so you don't just get all flash in the photo). Have to play with it. Sometimes you can get a good shot that isn't too close up, and just crop it later which will blow it up without losing definition.
Best results I've had with bright aluminum was a dark room with (I think) 1 light source. This week I'm focused on just getting my collection photographed. In the future I'll take another look at my photos and reshoot tokens as required. Today I finished all my California (except 2 chips) and Florida tokens! Here's some of my favorite pictures:
I have to use a sheet of white paper between the coin and the light source on the shinny ones. It helps defuse the light sometimes.
Alright, I got through a few more states! Finished North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Some will need reshoots but most are pretty decent. Here are a few highlights:
Today I photographed for a couple hours, now I have many more hours working with the pictures. Already I've completed images from Deleware, Virginia, Missouri, and Montana. I want you guys to see this token...it's my largest! It's 49mm and was unlisted in Cunningham.
With today's imaging I just finished all of my overseas tokens! 134 in all - not counting two I believe to be fakes. Here are a few from today:
I just got through another 30 coins. Forum member @BRandM has gifted me tokens in the past, and the first two tokens below turned out to be unlisted varieties, making them all the more interesting! Here they are: Columbus AFB had a large selection of colorful plastic tokens, here is a sampling:
