Don't ya just love all the off the wall size flips, sport card holder's, an assorted plastic junk people put them in
A couple from the batch of interesting things I picked up today 'Am I not a Woman and a Sister?' appeared on abolitionist tokens that have circulated in America and Great Britain. At the end of 1837 the American Anti-Slavery Society, located at 143 Nassau Street, New York, commissioned the firm of Gibbs Gardner & Co. of Belleville, N.J. to strike these copper tokens. These tokens show significant relations between abolition and the fight for equal rights of women. There were also 'Am I not a Man and a Brother' tokens, but the female version drew much more attention. I know nothing about this 1794 halfpenny token but was drawn to “Whale Fishery” legend.
Just got this yesterday, I was sorting coins and came upon them. I kinda like the fact it has a mintage number. Seems as though it would come in with at least a scarce rating. Numista gives it a 88 for what that is worth. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11705.html
I bought this because it's attributed to Da Nang Airbase which seems a bit odd since there are crossed anchors on the revese. Maybe the Navy was stealing the Air Force's toilets to give to their Skyraider Pilots? If you missed that story posted by @Jwt708 awhile back here it is again: https://m.warhistoryonline.com/viet...as-an-aerial-bomb-during-the-vietnam-war.html Seriously, I'm guessing HQ stands for headquarters but that's about all I know so far about this token. If I find out anything more I'll repost it. VN1520, 5c, 22mm, 4.3grms, brass, C/A
I have no clue what TTTL/HQ is, it's a mystery to me. NSC is Naval Support Center I think. I'm no expert on the history of the Vietnam War or Da Nang AB but the Marines did have a presence in Da Nang (Marble Mountain) and the Navy established a port there to support the Marines, Naval Support Activity or NAVSUPPTACT. If you're so inclined, check out this digitized "yearbook" from NAVSUPPACT Da Nang 1966-1967: https://www.history.navy.mil/content/dam/museums/Seabee/Cruisebooks/postwwiicruisebooks/NSAcruisebooks/NAVSUPPACT, Danang Vietnam 1966-67.pdf For some more info on the Navy's actives at NAVSUPPTACT Da Nang check out: http://www.mrfa.org/us-navy/us-navy.../danang-u-s-naval-support-activity-1964-1973/ I'm going to quote some info from MSG Ray Bows' (retired) "Vietnam Military Lore 1959-1973...Another Way to Remember" (pg 333): U.S. Navy Support Activity, Da Nang was located at the French Built Camp Tien Sha, the China Beach R&R Center and the White Elephant Building in downtown Da Nang. The tokens here were used at all location in Da Nang, as well as two enlisted clubs in Chu Lai, the CPO Club at Chu Lai, the Dong Ha Ramp All Hands Club, the Tan My CPO Club, the Chy Lai Officers' Club, the Quang Tri All Hands Club and the Hue Ramp All Hands Club. Bows catalog number from his book is DN377N-5, and it's pictured. Da Nang was (is?) the second largest city in South Vietnam at the time of the war and there was a large US presence. Bows goes further than Cunningham with breaking down which specific installations tokens were used at and I think Cunningham was wrong to put this token against Da Nang AB. Thank you for posting this token @longnine009 I enjoyed researching the Naval activities in Da Nang!
