Looks like a mildly stylized katakana writing. Which I don't read. edited to add: couldn't help myself. @Heavymetal and using the suggested translate...there you go. Katakana is used to spell out foreign words and if you think about it, the characters phonetically spell out Sanparesu which sounds a bit like Sun Palace. So, perhaps the name of the place is Sun Palace (the San Juarez was my mistake in not figuring out the little dot superscript, but google translate got that for me).
A 48mm medal by Halliday, BHM 631. Gilt WM under glass lunettes held by a pair of silver rings that screw together.
Recently completed NGC grading and extremely pleased it's a top pop. 1914 SC$1. I also included authentic 1914 ephemera (postcard and poster stamp) that I was planing for an exhibit.
Another NGC Hawaii SC$1 recently graded by NGC. The intact 49 is a bear to locate. Most are drilled out to remove the 49 from the phrase "THE 49TH STATE". Even the HK guidebook has a drilled out 49 as a plate example. Not an error, but a blunder on the part of the manufacturer. This makes it the 5th specimen in the NGC population and a Top Pop for this SC$1 group.
copper version brass version For those that may not know,Meijer's is a Michigan based/Midwest WallyWorld. They have a coin-op pony ride in each of their stores. it costs a penny, don't know if they still give out the tokens to the kids.
North Borneo was under administration and rule of the British and most of the plantation workers were Chinese. I have read that the use of the plantation tokens was limited to the property so paying the workers in private currency provided incentive to stay put. Years ago when I first noted these for sale, they were listed as tokens from Labuan The link below lists a date @1910 and meaning of N.L.B.T.C.L. as New London Borneo Tobacco Company Limited. Another source indicates N.L.B.T.C.L is New Labuan Borneo Tobacco Company Limited with a date around 1890. Years ago when I first noted these for sale, they were listed as tokens from Labuan so the second one makes more sense to me. I did a brief search and did not find a New London in Borneo. Labuan is an island close to the coast. http://www.plantagegeld.nl/index.php?paginaid=14
I thought I had sold all of my casino and related tokens but came across this one looking for some nicely toned proof singles. It looks lightly gilt in hand.
