I did a little more research on the 1797 dated pennies, Paddy. At that time Matthew Boulton was under contract to mint coins for the government at his private Soho Mint. As you said, the 2p coins were only struck in 1797...about 700,000 pieces...and then discontinued. Not only were they unpopular, but they were also difficult to strike because of their size. Boulton also struck the pennies of 1797, 1798 and 1799, but all were dated 1797. The reason for this seems obscure. There aren't any mintage numbers available, but one source said that more were coined than the total number of all issues minted in the 18th century. That would be why we see so many 1797s. Bruce
