I also picked up this Medallic Art medal today of FDR one of my favorite presidents. It was still in its 1961 packaging
Just paid for this one today, seller's pix. It says "TOKEN" right there on it, yet my research seems to show that it is a regular issue coin minted in England for use in the Guyana colonies.
Sometimes the term "token" has a meaning which is similar to, say, "bon pour" or "buono da" on some French and Italian coins: They were issued by a government authority, but not according to the monetary standards or conventions. While this will often have something to do with precious metal content, it was a little different here. A 3 gulden coin was 3s 5d, but (due to the value of the US dollar?) the rate was set to 3s 8d or something like that. After the 1816 Recoinage following the Napoleonic Wars, adding the term "token" was no longer necessary. Nutshell mode, as I do not know much about the background myself. Christian
Looks good! But be careful - the Best Before date of those round £1 pieces was October 15, a little more than a month ago. Christian
Just ordered one of these from the Mint.. kinda into the Space Program, love documentaries on the Apollo Program, my watch is an Omega Speedmaster etc. so got me an early Christmas present
I don't usually collect medals, but my wife found one in a coin shops junk bin a couple weeks ago. I wish I had known what it was when we got it because they had several other in the bin in same condition. They wanted $.50 a piece for them. This was minted by the Franklin mint for the Husky Oil Company in the late 1960s to early 1970s. It is part of a 13 medal set called Rugged Americans. These were handed out at Husky gas stations during this time whenever someone came in to fill up. Kinda a "collect them all" gimmick. They even had a display board they handed out to fill in the holes. I already have a complete Canada Coat of Arms medals(came with a lot of Canada coins that I purchased) that were minted around the same time frame for the Shell Oil company in Canada. These were handed out in a similar fashion as the one pictured below from the Husky Oil Company in the US. This is where Gas and Oil memorabilia and Coin/Medal/Token collecting intersect. Kinda cool I think. Well enough of the story telling...here it is Like I said this is 1 of 13. So now I guess I gotta catch em all.
Traded with another Sample collector for this one. The scratch on Lincoln shows that the coins selected for Samples aren’t anything special.
