Yes, I do think the designers of the Trump coin pictured in the previous post did go a little overboard when they drew his neck; my god, with that look his profile reminds me more of a Mike Ditka-type football player than a sitting President!
Here is just the obverse of another Trump coin from China. Slightly better looking portrait on this one. Looks a bit like Jimmy Carter?
Partly yes, true, but also an uncanny "visual reference" to Elvis Presley. Anyway, that's just the way it looks to me. Wait, now I know why...it's the eyes and the lips; they have that Elvis "tilt".
I'm not sure if this qualifies as exonumia in that I don't know if the coin/Medal contained within it is an actual official Vatican medal. Commonly called a Pope-en-er. It is a Pope John Paul II, bottle opener, purchased from the Vatican Gift Shop.
My dad's last duty assignment before he retired was ACSI in Heidelberg, 1966 - 1969. I attended the Army school in Paris, 1957 - 1960, but finished school in the States in 1962. We don't forget Korea, as Dad served there, too.
Sure, it's Exonumia. I consider the term very broad. "Official Vatican medal" is a term that you can interpret your own way. There are a LOT of medals for sale in the St. Peters' area. The annual papal medal series can be purchased at the Benedict XVI bookstore, but there's a lot of other medals, private and Vatican-issued around. I think people have them blessed. There is even a vending machine for a couple of medals affixed to one of the newsstands. Last time I was there was in 2016, some of the John Paul II ones now said "Sanctus Johannes Paulus II" as he was proclaimed a saint, but it's not like they destroy dies so you can buy what you please.
That is just plain awesome! Clearly the Vatican is missing an opportunity here; they should open branch stores in Cancun and Daytona Beach for the "Spring Breakers"!
Nice to hear from a fellow Army Brat, especially one who also spent some of his growing-up-time overseas and experienced the U.S. Army's European school system. My schools were Vienna Elementary (1953-55), Stuttgart Elementary (1955-60), and Heidelberg Junior & Senior High (1960-1965). My Dad went over just after D-Day with Seventh Army and ended up in Vienna with the Allied Occupation Force. He spent his entire career in Austria and Germany (G1 Section), retired from the military in Heidelberg in 1965, and passed away in 1984. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and he will always be a hero to me.
Picked out three things from a dealers oddball items for $10. This one is dollar sized and when I got home I discovered that the edge is stamped .999 silver. Google hasn’t been much help so if anyone knows anything about it, I’d appreciate it. It looks better than the pics.
I've picked up an interesting collection of 19th century British tokens, so I thought I would share some pictures of the better pieces:
As an afterthought it occurred to me that our two Dads might actually have know each other at Campbell Barracks in Heidelberg, and maybe even worked in the same building. If I remember correctly, G1 and G2 shared a building, and after my Dad retired from active service in 1965 he continued working in G1 as a DAC from then until 1980, so clearly overlapping with your father's time there. Just maybe....
