One of the most stunning medals engraved by J.C. Chaplain is generally agreed to the be "Visit of Tsar Nicholas II to Paris" shown here. I've been keeping an eye open for it, and managed to pick this one up.

That's wierd...why would someone bother to remove the Lincoln memorial, and not deface Lincoln himself?

It may be an unfinished work. Perhaps it was intended to engrave or otherwise mark the area on the reverse. We may never know.

Great tokens as always Cheetah. I assume your second Woodcock token is white metal...my favorite off-metal. I have to smile at the Barnes token with the oysters on the reverse. I've never seen that pictorial used before. I know you'll be at the Baltimore show so maybe I'll see you there. I'm going down Friday with a few friends from my coin club. Happy hunting! --- Bruce

    Nice post Whiz

There was an Elephantine Colossus in Brooklyn during the late 19th century. It served as a hotel, entertainment venue, museum, and even a brothel for a time. It burned down a mere 11 years after being erected.

Very nice example! In my experience 439 is notorious for being poorly struck. Not yours! :thumb:
