Thought this medal was interesting. Homing Pigeon Society of Douai France. Silvered Bronze. Alfred Borrel obv., Adolphe Rivet rev. Releasing Homing Pigeons over the Battlements. Hope for the Country in Latin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douai
I bought these in Havana, where I was recently. I was told that there were regular coin markets in the Plaza de Armas but none seemed to happen when I was there. The Havana mint is an industrial looking building and you are not allowed in and there is no sales shop. Aside from people selling ordinary "Che" 3 national peso coins to the tourists (face value about 12 cents) who would be using only convertible pesos, I found very few places that had numismatic stuff. The second one is about half dollar size and is listed in a small catalog of Cuban money that I bought, but prices are not listed. Judging from what I see on the internet, I paid a fair price, but no bargain (surprising how few bargains there are in Cuba). Palma was the first president of Cuba. Everything was really US controlled, and when Palma gave up in 1906, TR called in Taft to troubleshoot.
I have one like it in my collection, aac. I also have another NRA counterstamp, but in a different style. Bruce
Recent pickup: c. Late 19th - Early 20th Century Bronze Wrestling Medal - Possibly Canadian? Liked the design very much and couldn't convince myself not to buy it at the price it was listed.
Hi All, been doing some more research on my Louis the 14th medals. This one is dated 1663, to represent the capture of Marsal. Seems a lot of these planchets were flawed. Louis XIV on horseback, with entourage on the right, receiving keys of Marsal from a group of citizens; in the distance, the city of Marsal; framed by decorated border. 1683 Etching https://translate.googleusercontent...selle)&usg=ALkJrhjkjJybuQin52Q9AuubwD4eI2PCpg
Real Nice! I have run across a few Hard times tokens lately, just not in the shape of that one, I'd welcome it to my collection.
