I went to the Baltimore show on the 14th, and despite the convention center closing early, I found this interesting counterstamp at Steve Hayden's table. He told me he had just bought it a few minutes before I walked up. Quick turnaround for him, and a nice addition to my collection. It's a bit hard to read the legend from the picture, but pretty clear when in hand. It says "W.S. Catlett // Richmond, VA." Although I haven't researched it thoroughly yet, I will when time permits. The little I know of William S. Catlett at this point was provided to me by a collector/researcher friend of mine. Catlett was a boot and shoe commission merchant in Richmond, apparently in the 1870s and 80s. He was also a Mason. This counterstamp is a bit unusual in that it appears to be stamped from a two-line prepared punch. Nothing unusual there, but this particular punch has different font styles on each line. Now, that's unusual! Line one is of a more ornate style...serifs...and line two features cleaner, more sterile...sans serifs...letters. I don't recall seeing this feature before. Most unusual and very interesting. Bruce
It is very nice. Pictures aren't good enough for me to guess if it would upgrade or not. Doesn't look like it has any wear. Is the luster there?
There is very faint luster still remaining, apologize for the poor pictures I knew they wouldn't do it justice.I don't see any wear on the token in hand. I thought of resubmitting it . But wanted some opinions before I did
I suggest you get better pictures and create a new thread asking opinions. You'll have a chance for more people to see it because items here get quickly buried. This thread is great for just showing something off but not so great for lengthy discussions.
Not mine, just saw a picture and thought I would share the coolest hobo nickel I've ever seen. If you don't watch Futurama, you won't appreciate this as much.
