This one is considered counter-stamped but instead being stamped, it was carved. Got it in a cull lot. You know how Ebayers like their culls on the cheap. The didn't like this one, I think I will just keep it. What do you think of it?
I don't blame you. I've never seen that holder before, and I wouldn't want to damage it, either. Chris
I would be willing to bet that the rev, is the same as your medal , made smaller scale as well as cheaper to hand out to people invited to the event. It's a very well done piece and as you recall Chris in 1960 they could of struck this in silver at around $2.50 each....?
That's a nice example of an American Primitive counterstamp, buddy16. Sometimes these old, crude stamps look like they've been applied with a chisel or something else, but the rough look is just a result of poor workmanship, and/or wear and damage. It's a keeper, IMO. Bruce
I have a couple MACO medals...German Shepherd club medals from the '50s. One silver and the other gold colored.
I'd like to see them if it is possible. Here is the link to my ANA Convention medals. Except for the 1976 medals, all of them were struck by MACO. http://robecsimages.com/chris.html Chris
Try placing your lights at the 10 & 2 o'clock positions and at 45 degrees to the subject. (If there is a light directly overhead, turn it off.) With the camera directly overhead, this configuration prevents the light from bouncing off the subject and into the lens. Chris
I picked up this nice old counterstamp a few weeks ago. It's on a 1798 Large Cent (S-186). It has the look of a silversmith back stamp, but looks a bit large to be one. I found two silversmiths from that time period who had very similar "WC" initial stamps. William Cleveland of Norwich and New London, CT and William B. Cordell who practiced in Providence, RI. Cordell looks to be a better choice over Cleveland, but neither man's stamp matches this one exactly. I'm sure there were other styles each man used that I haven't seen so will have to let an attribution for this one go. I'm going to pass it around to a few friends of mine who know more about silversmith marks than I do. See if they come up with anything that I missed. If they do, I'll let you know. Bruce
Two nice railroad medals, dwhiz. If I remember correctly, you collect railroad-related exonumia. I think I have a few pieces somewhere in my collection, but haven't seen them in some time. You have to love the name "Old Peppersass". I can't even imagine how scary that ride on the cog railway was...especially in those days. Two nice pieces of history. Bruce
I rode the cog about 5 time and Old Pepperass is on display there. I loved the ride it's really neat. I do collect railroad related exonumia and really enjoy it also collect moose related items too.
What do you expect from one who collects coins, how about this one both on one token and can you imagine I also collect Daniell Carrs items
Haha, that one is cool - trains and moose! I was going to ask if you had anything that covered both trains and moose.
Looks like dwhiz got you, Jack. I was a little surprised to see a moose and a train on the same token too. "Moose Gooser" is almost as good as Old Peppersass. Bruce
