I'm still around Jack, just haven't too much new to post lately. Not only that, but I'm being educated by you guys on military tokens. Some neat pieces you've been showing us. You know I love the history lessons too.:) Thanks!

Sometimes in researching tokens you can do a Google / Maps search of an address to see which cities have a street address that matches one on a token. In your case, 812 Rome St. Today at least, there are such locations in Bowdon and Carrollton, GA., Newark, NJ., Petersburg, VA., and Bossier City, LA. It might give you a clue to where your issuer was from. Sometimes it's helpful, sometimes not. When you don't have much to go on though, it might lead you in the right direction H8. I have access to some old Newark, NJ city directories and will look for Charles Johnson there when I have a chance H8. You sometimes get lucky, you never know.

They are self made, luggage tags the name and street number are the name of the party that made it. They also served as good luck pocket pieces. I posted a couple examples a while back. With the info on them. You still can find the machines around today. They aren't a good for or trade token, you turned a large dial and spelled out what you wanted on the rim. Look closely and you can see the individual stamp marks. Since you pulled the handle to impress them on the disk. Some times they are lightly marked.I have a number of them and find them in the bargain box, usually because of the private names on them around here they go for .25¢/.50¢ They are covered in Tokens and medals by Alpert & Elman. $1.00/$10.00 depending on what is imprinted on them.

Are you a member of the club dwhiz? I've been to their show a couple of times and thought is was interesting for a small show. Couldn't make it this year though. Two members of my local club...West Jersey Numismatic Society...set up this year but just couldn't make it down there to see them.

I seem to remember the GSA around 1975 selling off surplus survival kits that were carried by early cold war bomber crews-50's 60's. That would be some interesting militaria. :)

GSA did sell a ton of stuff off back then. One item that wasn't sold was the personal medical kits they had 2 - 4 injection of morphine. Most people don't turn them back in I know when I got to Germany they were very tradeable.
You could trade for to many things.

@jello, I hope to one day meet you in person!

So...there's this one seller on eBay who almost exclusively auctions various Air Force base trade tokens, usually around ten or so at the same time, and all of them different bases. Very frustrating for me because I want all of them but can't bid strongly on all of them at the same time.:sour: Usually I have to pick one or two that I really want and see where things go.

Anyway it seems like every couple of months or so they come up. I usually check his page weekly...anyway last week he had nine or ten up and I decided I was going to bid strong, go to bed, and see what happened. Won seven! The best part for me was I started talking to the seller asking him why/how he always had Air Force tokens for sale (and only Air Force). Well the last 30 years he put together a set of tokens from all Air Force bases and is selling them off because his kids aren't interested (dang kids!). He said he got all the bases except eight. Unfortunately one of his eight includes my white whale - McChord!:banghead: He said he saw it come up for auction a few years ago and it went for $200!

So I guess moral of the story here is...I thought it was pretty cool that this seller was/is a kindred spirit in Air Force tokens and when I find McChord, I'll likely have to pay for it.

Well...need to post a pic of something...

As usual, the scan destroys any visual appeal in this token. It has a nice color and what I like about this one is it's made of nickel...or some nickel-like material giving it a good weight.

Maybe we will meet somewhere. Before my cancer has taken me.
But otherwise for military tokens I like to see all that every one has posted.
I would like to see your collection.

Got this postcard off ebay, a long time ago. It's the USS Indiana BB1 (assuming my lesswire provider can upload the image). It was America's first battleship and used as coastal defence. It was mailed from Boston MA, on Dec. 9, 1907. On the front the sender wrote "This ship is in the water." I'm guessing it was in the yards for refitting not long before he wrote that. The Indiana was decommissoned in 1903 and recommissioned in 1906 so it probably needed some work. Either that or he's pissed off that his recruiter didn't tell him ships go to sea. :p
