Middlesex 1038b • Am I Not a Man and a Brother Am I Not a Man and a Brother • Conder Token Middlesex 1038b, rated Common, but not commonly found in such condition, Near Gem. I'm sure most Conder Token collectors have seen this issue before. I had wanted a nice example for many years, but waited for the right one to come along. When I saw this example, I could not resist. Its lettered edge reads: PAYABLE AT LANCASTER LONDON OR LIVERPOOL. It's included in the National and Social series, and as such might rightfully be considered a 'medal.' I consider it both token and medal. I have seen too many examples of this issue which circulated not to believe in its potential as a 'token.' I believe it's obvious that the piece was maintained by prudent collectors and dealers. Thanks to each of them for their part in maintaining such condition. They were good stewards, including sellers Baldwin and Groll. A note on edge rarity. To me, if a token's edge is all that determines its rarity, I find little appeal there. If I bought an example, I'd be buying it for the design, eye appeal and condition, or grade, if you will. Take two tokens of RRR rarity. For one, its design only had 4 or fewer examples struck For the other, perhaps one hundred of that design were struck, or more, but only 4 with the particular edge. I prefer rarity of designs, not edges. In fact, I prefer more common edge lettering, as clear as possible. I have no objection to owning tokens rated Common, issues that other collectors can seek to own. .
