These two large cents were true cherrypicks - I bought them unattributed, nobody else noticed the varieties: 1794, Sheldon 18b, R4. One of the Heads of 1793. The obverse is still distinct, the reverse only poor, but this variety seems to often have a very weak reverse. 1797, Sheldon 124. Rarity 5+. A nice example as they come. This variety very often shows rough surfaces.
All cherry picked. Lets see - a composite of all the shield nickel DDO's I have. The 1867 gets a special call out since it is a DDO and the wide repunched date. The a bunch of missing leaf ones. I looked for years for these and only found them within last few years. A couple came from junk bins.
And forgot about this one - 1882 snow-6, bought for like 125 and sold for 1500. Only one I have sold so far.
This is my best one to date. 1836/1336 Overton-108 For just over $65, I could care less about the 2 small scratches on the reverse. Would it straight grade? Probably not, but then again I’m unlikely to ever try. I like my Bust Halves raw!
Cherrypicking is my main method of purchase, and here are some of mine. I may be a bit late to the party... Top left is an 1857 FS-401b Obv of 56. $18 Top right is an 1868 S-13 Hub Through (also a very slight RPD). Seems to command massive premiums - a F15 sold for $800 on an Ebay auction. Probably fewer than 30 exist. $28 Bottom left is an 1872 IHC that was labeled as an 1878. Bought for $21, sold for $75. Bottom right is an 1882 Broken 2 IHC. CBD also has an example. $3
This is probably the best pick, I have ever made. This is the Snow-7. Obverse clash die with the $20 gold piece.
Let's throw some blood in the water......here's your chance to own an "R-5 varity coin", its a lower mintage , rare die remarriage. The listing is on e bay ends on Monday night. It is an 1832 cap bust half dime, Valentine 4 Obv. 2 rev. U LM 11.2 I do not own this specimen or am I biding it...I have this varity in my collection already. Here's an image of the coin.... you should be able to match it up doing a search quite easy. Have fun.... The recut O as well the die crack A to rim are key pups. The difference between the 11.1 and 11.2 is interesting learning at everythinghalfdimes.com
True....... however A mintage of what a 965 k coins, and an R-5 ,<95 known to exist, a prize to a variety collector!
Nice one. I saw an 1864 with an unlisted retained cud a couple days ago for $10, unfortunately did not buy it.
This was listed as a 64 bronze. I am always amused by the 1864s, many of the 64 bronze are listed as the L variety and many of the Ls are listed as the bronze. This is more common in the lower grades.
Well, Paddy, I won this coin for around $50 shipped. So whatever I sell it for, half the profit is yours in gratitude for sharing your knowledge so willingly on this forum.
