I couldn't afford a Twenty Cent piece when I collected these in my youth, so I thought this would be the "next best thing." I still can't afford a Twenty Cent piece. Ignore the grades on the flips, they are musings of a 20-something year old numismatist, but I don't think they are off by much. I probably need to get these out of their flips and into something a bit more protective. I don't have any of the important key dates in this series, but have almost everything else. Z
Lousy photo but its the one in my type set. I'll have to reshoot this since my photo skills have improved. How do y'all feel about including the 1864 Small Motto in a type set? I know it's an expensive inclusion but do you think it is really a "type". Red Book calls it a separate "variety". I know this is almost purely a case of "include what you like" but I was just wondering if there is any consensus of feeling about it.
The only old piece of red copper in my collection, and it's turning. It's in rattle holder too, which means it's been in there for 30 years. So I wonder what I did wrong ... Here's a nice 1864 Small Motto. and an 1870 from the circulated set I assembled and sold 40 years ago. The coin is an "old time EF-40." The strike is so shallow that it would have gone to Fine or less with only a little bit of circulation.
I really like these coins, simply because it's the first coin has the IGWT motto. Or so I've been told. But it's hard to find one where the WE is visible. It's on a high point and gets worn down easily.
What happened to that poor IHP in the top left corner? Looks like it had a fight with a pair of diagonal cutters and lost.
