Now they use the term "Commercial Grading". They figure what the coin is worth, then assign the corresponding grade to it.
That's right. No, I am old school, and still follow technical grading. It makes it tough to find nice stuff, but when I buy it, it is the 'right stuff'. I haven't had a coin come back from CAC without a bean on it.
And I've never sent a coin TO CAC, so we're even. And you know what? Everyone will be dead before I do, too.
Seriously. Even the best regular submitters I know aren't batting 1000. I like Finn, and often agree with him, but he must've only submitted once or twice to keep a record like that. It's just not plausible in the slightest for a regular submitter.
Incidentally, I once had CAC reject an MS65 Barber Half, and an AU53 classic gold half eagle... so I sent them off for regrade at PCGS where they got the same grades, but new cert numbers, and THEN he green stickered BOTH of them. What does that tell you about CAC?
I guess I object to the entire concept. We originally had a problem. There was "my grade" and "your grade", and that led to disagreements and skullduggery. So we needed "his grade" or more accurately, the consensus of THREE "his grades", aka "their grade". So now we need "this other fella's confirmation of the first three fellas' grade"? What the what? It's insanity! Where does it stop?
Like most of us, sometimes life deals us bad breaks, and we need to step away from this hobby for awhile. When the ship rights itself, we come back. I had been a direct submitter of coins for YEARS when my first divorce, the NASTY one, came along. When I got back in, this time with my "offspring unit" in tow, I went to a major show and started seeing these green ovals. I asked what was up with the green ovals. The dealer told me. I stood there with my mouth agape for what must've been 5 minutes. I was sure he was punking me. I'm still not entirely sure he wasn't.
Not necessarily. Some people only submit coins that they feel have a good chance of stickering. Others, like myself who have a collector membership and don't pay for coins that fail to sticker, will submit anything that might be for sale in the near future regardless of its prospect for a sticker.
Then you should test your theory. Buy a bunch of ratty looking AU58s dirt cheap and resubmit for an easy score. Of course, we both know that most (if not all of the pieces) have little chance of upgrading. Edit: Typo
Step #1 - Find me "ratty looking" AU58's. I don't see any. Now "ratty looking" MS60's and MS61's? Yah, they're all OVER the place.
God, you are so obnoxious. For someone supposedly so well versed in coin grading and market availability, you make some pretty naive statements. If those coins had a snowball's chance in hades of making it into MS holders, then at least some of the coins would already have been upgraded. True Views are mandatory for coins above $3k (i.e. anything above the regular tier which is capped at $3k) so we could track the upgrades. Any idiot can resubmit them.
Thank you. It's fully intentional to annoy people like you. Check with the other posters upthread that aren't you or me. They know. Please DO try to stay current. This subject is VERY often discussed here. Nothing that was done even a few years back counts for Jack Squat any more in the 58 to 62/63 range of grades. Even most of those who DECRY it will admit it.
Has anyone ever researched the average life span of a gold coin before it wears down to the basal level? I'm surprised your coin has held up so well since gold is so soft.
